Is there any trick to surviving in this area? The sprites are perfect for my skills, but every few minutes this happens:
A gust of wind blows an ash ladened cloud of gas into your face, burning your throat like fire. You roll on the ground in terrible pain as a coughing spasm wracks your body.
This does internal neck damage, and after 3 times (maybe 5-6 minutes total) I had an internal bleeder:
Your body feels at full strength.
Your spirit feels full of life.
You are slightly fatigued.
You have a severely swollen and deeply bruised neck, some minor abrasions to the right leg, some minor abrasions to the left leg.

It just seems like this is a bit excessive... Is there a stat that helps here? An item? It just doesn't seem like this is a viable hunting area.

It's just one of those areas that sucks. I THINK Elemental Shield works to avoid the ash, but I'm not 100% positive. I tried hunting the area back in the day on my Necromancer because nobody ever went there and just had to stock up on a buttload of whatever the internal neck wound herbs are(I forget).

Agreed. I really like the area. I'd like to see unarmed fire sprites moved out and a new construct creature put in there to help fill the construct ladder. Empaths can heal the neck damage so they should be able to hunt there OK.
