No systemsologist, so no clue how resource-intensive either of these options are:
1) Opt-in SETting to have a voting alert pop into your OOC window as a functional link (at least a functional link for newer front ends) on login every 12 hours.
2) VOTE verb that pushes the link out and tells you if you typed the verb already in 12 hours' time (not that it can really track if you voted, but it could know how long since the last time you typed it was)
The teeth lands a solid (5/23) hit that pokes the teeth into Turul's rear end (more embarrassing than painful!).

If you use SF its easy because the link is on the FE. Possibly adding a link to Genie would make it easy?
Not sure if that is an option or not. tack a Vote link to the end of the menu bar.

I vote when I click on Elanthipedia and see the banner. It's fast and easy. If I don't go to Elanthipedia, I don't vote, but I'm usually on there looking up something at least once a day. That's about all I'm willing to do. It's not high on my priority list.

Lately I've been wondering if ANY of my votes count. I vote at home and at work and have not been able to verify that it actually increments :/ This is after a 16+ hour period of not voting just to be sure.
Has anyone else noticed this? I wonder if it only updates every X minutes or something.

That's impressive with Aardwolf, let's get DR back in the top few. Vote for DR Today, and tell your friends to vote early and often.

They have some automated system built into their game, probably everyone currently playing auto-votes. They may have to type in a command (which is probably automated) to confirm the vote to bend around the rules.
Could create an account and find out probably.

Huh, yeah that is really strange. Good to know we can hang in the top 5 despite some rather suspicious voting patterns.
Odd that it took folks so long to get verified, but please post your support of DR in their forums :)

I think requesting the Genie folks add something there would help a bit.
We've got the capability of adding some kind of login banner that pops up after a while, but I've been avoiding that as we already have a lot popping up on the screen during the login process.
What are the opinions about adding something like that?

This is for genie, and if so where am I putting this input, and what is it telling the system to do (like what am I looking to do from my end)?

Re: Top Mud Sites on 07/29/2013 10:53 PM CDT
It is indeed for Genie. You can paste it into the command line or save it in your trigger file. What it does is when logging in it matches against the standard news message and echos to your main window and log window in blue (if you use one) the web address. It is a reminder, not an automatic solution.

We just broke into the top 20, I mean I can't believe the Aardwolf deal, that's just straight WOW.
But I know there is another part of this, and we were initially voting a lot more ourselves. Now I think there are but a few diligent voters, we need to vote early and often folks.

Re: Top Mud Sites on 08/01/2013 01:50 PM CDT
This isn't about aardwolf engaging their players and convincing them to vote more diligently than us through one device or another (IG announcements/reminders/daily email blasts on a list serve). The motivation levels of our players and their players are likely equivalent - we're both just a couple of small population random samples (nerds with no more or less energy, enthusiasm, and stick-to-itness than each other).
If aarwolf isn't employing IP masks and other tricks, topmudsites' architecture would be able to easily (really easily) track the source of the votes - so if some dude at aardwolf has created 500 accounts to use for votes, TMSs would know. If they are employing tools to hide vote origins, then it's working for them. So either tricks work, or TMSs doesn't care where the votes come from, even if they say they do.
In any case, I'd bet aardwolf is engaged in shenanigans and are smart enough just to keep themselves at #1, and avoid overkill (and obviousness) by casting 10,000 votes a day.
If aardwolf can do it, so should we. Simu can't, but players who have the skill should experiment with ways to play that ranking system. Why? Not so DR hits #1, but so aardwolf drops down a few pegs.
If you're smarter than me (all of you except for krooner), and you have this skill set (if you don't don't get involved, you'll only screw yourself), I suggest you try a couple of techniques and see what happens. Simu management, please admonish me that this is a bad idea and you don't condone it. I will acquiesce, then the rest of you should go to work.

addendum
If you do have the skills, start really slow. We need to move upwards at a reasonable pace. Try 5 or 10 votes per day. If you see them moving, you're probably on pace for something good. If you need to push a bit more, go ahead. But if 3 people 'make it so' in a huge way, will be too much volume. Be smart is what I'm saying.

I strongly doubt Aardwolf or any of its players are engaged in anything fishy. A more likely/reasonable answer is that they just do a better job at petitioning/reminding their playerbase to vote.
I know SIMU said that it has a button banner thing on one of their front ends, but if most people don't use that front end then it's not really going to get as big of an impact as it could. A more reasonable solution would be inserting a reminder that pops up in the OOC window or something when you log in. The super-best-awesome possibility would be if could function as a real clickable link in most front-ends (I think most post-wizard front ends and genie have the capability to allow clickable links that open up a browser, right?).
The teeth lands a solid (5/23) hit that pokes the teeth into Turul's rear end (more embarrassing than painful!).

Ya you may be right, but it wouldn't be aardwolf, it would be a player, or someone's cousin - aardwolf may not even know. That's why I suggest an enterprising person give it a shot. People around here, including you, have the background and motivation to design a strategy for winning this relatively simple game.
After all, if people can shut down government websites, they can certainly dominate TMSs little ranking thingy.
But you may be right.

I don't think a super double secret black OPs X-Force section of Aardwolf is responsible.
>>People around here, including you, have the background and motivation to design a strategy for winning this relatively simple game.
If the solution is "cheat," then I'd rather not play to begin with.
>>My question is, how do the players that don't frequent the forums even know about this? We know that the posting/reading population of DR is much lower than the playing one.
This, to me, is one of two driving reason why we're not higher.
The other reason being that it's just not ritual enough for those who do know about it. Sometimes I vote two or three times a day, sometimes I forget completely. More often than not my voting relies on if I visited ePedia's main page and saw the banner.
