Removing the obvious PvP implications between "good" and "not good", I'm wondering what defines all PCs as "good" to begin with and what the opposite of that would be. Hrm. Interesting.

If your talking about things being coded as aids for those who want to RP "Evil" then yay!
If your talking about lessening policy so DR Prime becomes more TFish, then so NOT yay.
More CvC is good. More PvP is bad. Huge difference, guess i'll just hope those making the decisions actually get this fact. :p

But it'd be just plain sweet to have some kinda "alignment" system in DR. It would prolly make alot of us think more in terms of our characters rather than ourselves.

I think this would be a cool idea especially if you had to choose a god out of the patheon to serve and perhaps depending on your guild recieve an ability from that godhead. Make it a one time choice.

Perhaps not a one time choice but very difficult to change. Other than that, I think allignments are a great idea.

You mean do away with Hero Realms ? Actually let people have a chance to play something other then a good two shoes without having to worry about all the sheep in the realms that freak out if someone is 'bad' ? It's amazing and a little sad how much an evil/bad/not good person is usually the underdog in this game. Even more so with the dark overtones that can be found in so many places in the realms.

And how often are they taken seriously ? In order to be an effective bad guy you have to be taken seriously. And so much RP in DR revolves around killing things this makes it hard to start off as an effective bad guy. Not to mention killing novices is apparently almost as bad as grave robbing.

The problem has always been that its hard to take them seriously when they don't even take themselves seriously. RPing evil takes effort... most of the so called "villains" we now see in game just don't put any real effort into it.

Somehow I don't think we're going to be seeing an alignment system, especially not one that's based on actions. How do you define an action as good or evil? Is giving people money good and stealing it bad? Tending a wound...if I tend the wound of another person, and they're evil, by supporting their life am I doing something evil? There's too many variables for something like that, I think, and personally I don't really like the idea of declaring an alignment. When I used to run a D&D campaign, that was one of the rules I made sure to enforce: Nobody says their alignment. I don't think that declaring alignment in DR would go over at all well.
All that said, I really do hope it's some changes in mechanics....evil as a definition is hard to compass. Just because an action is obviously evil doesn't make the person evil...the heart of true evil isn't malice, it's indifference. Active attempts to hurt pale besides the damage that can be wrought by a person who doesn't care what happens to other people so long as their own goals are served.

The way to define an action as good or evil is to set up good and evil quests in the game. If you solve a good quest, you receive a raise in your good status...likewise with evil.
Lowering the standards of good and evil to stealing, tending someone, or stalking someone would involve too much resources...there's too much speculation there and never enough fact.
But if you were to say, Hunt down the bad moster that's been killing farmers in Kaerna Village...then people would notice you as a good person...even though you may have done it for your own selfish reasons(like treasure).
The benefits here are multi-leveled:
1. You may try to pretend your evil..but your actions will be the deciding factor.
2. The act of solving good quests and evil quests means that what you do most would skew the average one direction or the other. So even if you did do something nice, all those other evil things still make you a malevolent being.
3. The overall effect of having good and evil people and creatures would allow a new range of spells and possibly abilities, especially in regards to things like the "Harm Evil" spell.
4. Perhaps this would enhance the cleric class.

I suggest that "evil" characters are unsuccessful simply because they are so unrealistic. What is called evil is more often a conflict of interests or difference in perception of the world. Do you imagine Hitler considered himself to be evil? How about KKK members? Or how about the US president who ordered the bombs dropped on Japan? Fervent belief in your own point of view is admired by some, condemned by others.
My point is this ... too often I've seen those who try to RP evil and only manage a caricature of someone who dresses in black and does bad deeds. If you TRY to be bad you've missed the point and more often than not will over-do it. No one weighs their actions and chooses something because it's bad, they choose what furthers their interests.
I think there's a much better chance of having good RP introduced if we begin focusing more on worship of a specific god. Great atrocities are done in the name of religion, the one who prevails is deemed good, the loser bad. An ardent follower of Hodierna could be the vilest form of evil to a follower of Urrem'tier who is the very image of godliness in their own mind.

I think you are right in terms of realism. And honestly, we don't really know if DR is going into a good/evil direction...
However, I'd like to point out that in movies, games, and books about fantasy, there is nearly always an attempt to create evil based not on perception, but on pure evilness.
Since this game is about fantasy roleplaying, I'd say it's okay for players to roleplay evil and try to follow that path, especially if some of us would enjoy it more. I'm sure a few people don't wish to be seen as good or evil...I say, let their actions dictate it, not their words.
On a side note, what would the chances be of determining if anyone is good or evil? It shouldn't be perceivable to the naked eye. So, in most cases, magic or special abilites aside, a person won't even have to pay attention to it.
