Howdy,

I noticed something very strange today.

I respec'd and left my Discipline, Wisdom, Intelligence all at 10. I went through the entire Ranger spell book and found my personal max casting caps and the max spell prep caps for each spell.

I then went and trained Discipline from 10 up to 50. I went through a few spells (same method as before) and noticed that the max spell prep caps for every spell had gone down. My personal max casting caps had also gone down in relation to the drop in the maximum spell prep.

I then went and trained Discipline from 50 to 60. The max spell prep caps, and my personal max casting caps all went up, but not quite to the Discipline 10 levels.

I then went and tested these spells using the same method, for every 5 stat points in Discipline up to 100. There was no change after 60 Discipline.

I then went and trained Wisdom from 10 to 25. The max spell prep caps, and my personal max casting caps reverted to the caps I had recorded at 50 points in Discipline, 10 points in Wisdom.

I continued to train Wisdom and Intelligence to various levels and noticed no change in caps from 50 points in Discipline, 10 points in Wisdom.

Some numbers:

10 in Discipline, Wisdom, Intelligence:
Instinct max mana cap was 109, personal cap was 109.

50 in Discipline, 10 in Wisdom, 10 in Intelligence:
Instinct max mana cap was 100, personal cap was 100.

100 in Discipline, 25 in Wisdom, Intelligence:
Instinct max mana cap was 106, personal cap was 106.

100 in Discipline, any combination of Wisdom and Intelligence over 25:
Instinct max mana cap was 106, personal cap was 106.

I tested with more than just one spell, but for the sake of brevity, I shortened it. All spells were affected similarly. For instance any spell with a previous max prep of 109 moved down to 100, move up to 106, etc. Same for all spells with similar max preps.

That actually looks more like the difference in mana ranges Rangers get on a lot of spells based on the room type. Were you doing the tests in different places?

I just ran around to different rooms, and max spell prep is the same in all of them.

I thought the max spell prep is a global cap type of thing? Is that different in 3.0?

So, cool thing that I learned in chatting with Ricinus:

Ranger spell preps vary by the environmental setting of the room in which you are casting. Full wilderness has a lower max prep (compared to more urban areas), which increases your personal max/max prep % = more power or something. It's good! (Maybe Ricinus can explain it better).

An interesting side effect is that you can now compare environmental settings with more granularity than is available with PACE. For instance, the outside of the Crossing guild is less wilderness-y than the inside of the guild, by just a bit. This is probably useless information, but it is interesting for folks who like to gather such useless information.
