You should notice some Arcana experience when FOCUSing on a runestone. It starts to peter out after 50 ranks or so, but it should be enough to help people learn some low-level Arcana. Additionally, if you FOCUS on a runestone with a cross-realm spell, you'll learn some Sorcery at a somewhat slower rate (since the thing you're mainly doing is engaging with Arcana).
There are some experience timers on this related to the spell on the runestone. They're not super long, though.

Might want to look at Sorcery learning rates. Arcana might be affecting it. 2 focuses on different runes (not sure on your timers yet if its focus in general or per item) and it only moved to dabbling with 0 Sorcery skill.

Re: Runestones on 01/10/2013 01:34 AM CST
I also do have a request though Im not sure how possible it is. As I was told in Test last night runestones now come in two flavors... complex type that you can modify the prep mana and simple that you can not. I also found out the hard way that no off mana simple runes can be cast with 0 or low sorcery. This seems... kinda off to me. I would think that the complex would be the harder to use. So my request is if its possible to make simple runes prep spells very very low so that they can be used in sorcery training. Mine were all prepping at 23-25 which is certain backfire and no learning. I think Id rather see it so that with simple runes you should harness mana to up the amount you want rather than simply not be able to use them.
Once the learning rates on the focus part get looked at I may change tunes but for now I see this as an issue. Outside of teaching classes it seems very tough to learn Sorcery. Even a simple spell like GG only got me to maybe 3/34 or 4/34 in about 10 casts and then it blew my arms off 2 or 3 times. Im actually fine with the arm blown risk but it would be nice to make it a bit more worth it skill training wise. Keep in mind these were min prep since I was backfiring really easy due to 0-8 Sorcery ranks.

Re: Runestones on 01/10/2013 12:02 PM CST
Sorry I had posted during my testing. I ended up testing 4 runes asketine, elbaite, calavarite, and sraeth. I got Sorcery skill to move twice over the course of multiple focuses. I tried all of them in a row first. That was where my mini log was from. It got Sorcery to show up in my field exp window on the Sraeth and the Calavarite focuses. I then waited several minutes during which I would grab a random rune and focus it but I never again got Sorcery to move. Im about to hop back in and check again though.

Re: Runestones on 01/10/2013 12:22 PM CST
Heres a bit better log of it. 5 runes cycled through. I only ever learn anything on the calavarite (Arc Light) rune. I cant figure out the timer since I only get Sorcery to move randomly. I tried cycling through them all repeatedly and it only moved the once... I then waited till I got the IDLE message and cycled again... still nothing. Then I just started rapid focusing on the calavarite (about 15 times or so) and I got another dabbling but then I didnt get any other movement. I can only get that mindstate 1/34. I cant get Sorcery to move again off runes before it pulses.

Just removed the timer - Let me know how that goes?
Since the learning peters out after 50 ranks anyway I'm not too concerned about this being an avenue for abuse, but since it trains two skills at once (if your arcana is low) the learning rate isn't as fast as a single skill.
Remember also that Sorcery is a skill that's not necessarily intended to be as easy to learn as augmentation (just like thievery is harder to learn than climbing).

Re: Runestones on 01/10/2013 03:14 PM CST
Hmm I only learn off my Calavarite rune. Did a few cycles of all my runes (the off mana ones anyhow) and got nadda other than 1/34 mindstate when I hit the calavarite. So I kept out the calavarite and did 40 focuses on it. Didnt move past 1/34 in Sorcery. Im thinkin it looks like its checking difficulty of the rune somehow but Im not sure its reading it right since at 0 ranks of sorcery I would imagine it should learn at least a bit better than it is.

Re: Runestones on 01/10/2013 03:40 PM CST
I'm wondering if it's kinda-sorta like the problem that was initially happening over in Plat (forever ago, now fixed!), where you're at a detriment if your augmentation/warding/etc is notably higher than your sorcery, so we'd never learn sorcery even though we were casting at our personal caps. Only in this case, because arcana is doing so much of the heavy lifting in the check because of the lack of sorcery, Renzar can't learn sorcery.

Re: Runestones on 01/10/2013 03:54 PM CST
Soch fixed it over in test now. It was lookin at the wrong skill and then he upped the learn rate on it. Its a bit tedious and it declines after 50 ranks but its a great foot in the door into Sorcery for those that dont want to learn from a class. Ive never been big on the fact that there are gonna be teaching mules and folks are gonna get tons of ranks from not actually messing with Sorcery and cross mana spells. Kinda takes all the "my arms just exploded for the 15th time today" fun out of it. But c'est la vie.
