Any tips on training Warding? At 425 I'm having trouble getting it to move, though as far as I know we've only got Aether Cloak and ES with which to work. Clearly at 425 ES isn't going to help, but I've tried keeping AC active against Cave Troll stone strike (~200-300 defenses critter) and scaly seordmar lightning bolt (~400+) and watched AC effects trigger but have yet to see Warding move at all. I'm going to try black marble garg's in a bit here, and maybe those adders...

Admittedly Warding isn't really supposed to be a big part of our wheelhouse, but I'd still like to be able to train it outside of classes.

Also, haven't done enough testing to see if Path Defense helps...but so far as I can tell it's marginal if at all.

Not a Warrior Mage, but my Cleric is having the same general issue with both warding and utility.

You don't really need to defend against magic attacks to learn warding, it more a matter of keeping the requisite buffs active. I have found that the most important factor by far is mana invested into the spell. DR 3.0's magic exp is the inverse of DR 2.0, and encourages you keep your mana bar depleted. Push the limits of your skill with AC as much as possible and you will probably have more success.

I can lock warding by using 30 mana (cap) AC running for awhile. I have not yet found another way to lock it besides doing that but I haven't been in test yet tonight to try more things.

Luck is nothing more than opportunity meeting preparation.

Hmmm, I guess I was min-prepping it. Seems to be moving now when prepped at 20 (cant do 30). Thanks. Could have sworn I'd tried high prep before, but whatever.

Have you tried the AP spell Lay Ward? It should teach to 600 or so...

Forgot about the AP book, thanks. Lay Ward at...45 mana wasn't teaching me anything on the cast. hmm....

I found Prep MAF 20, harn 20, harn 20, cast, brought me up 3 mindstates. Prep LW 20, harn 20, harn 20, cast, brought me up 1 mindstate. That's good, I'd hate to be a young mage without AC and having only ES to work my warding. Both those should do the job nicely.

Still, it would be more satisfying to learn from actively defending spells with warding (like we do with parry/shield/etc) rather than just spamming spells like the old days.

While a good idea, that would end up severely limiting the options for people who want to train warding. Wouldn't be as bad as trying to train escaping with web attacks, but still.
