Since there's no "General Policy Discussion" I post this here.. :)
>>RE: Player-Owned "Entities" (POE) -- This topic includes Familiars, Companions, Mounts (horses/goats) and Guardian Spirits. If you engage in an attack on a POE, you give consent to its owner to retaliate against you. The converse is that if a POE is directed to attack you, the owner then gives consent to you to respond against him/her. The sole exception to this would be inadvertant attacks on POEs that might be initially mistaken for huntable or invading creatures, in which case we hope that a ceasing of attack and apology will suffice and will not require intervention.
Here, let me put this in words everyone will understand.
I dunno, maybe I'm thinking too code-literally, but I think all these (Familiars, Companions, Mounts (horses/goats) and Guardian Spirits) fall under the same consent umbrella as any other Player-Owned "Objects" (we'll call them POO.. 5-year olds laugh and adults cringe, but when ya come down to it it, they're all just POO), be they coins or swords or ships or donkeys.
To stem the tide and save a lot of GM time developing policy for each and every new thing that comes about.. how about we declare once and forever that all personal property is deemed sacred, and that messing with someone else's POO, regardless of intent, shall be considered a consenting act.
I'm sure there was a good idea in there somewhere.. YOU dig it out.

The tongue-in-cheek answer would be because for some unexplained reason, people love to mess with POO and find new and interesting ways to play with and/or abuse it. ;)
The actual reason would be because it was felt to be a necessary statement in preparation for the eventuality of POE that will be able to attack.
But if I could find a way to post a POO policy I would have have to do it. <g>

1) Will horses and goats have something like a favor system or will they be in auto-walk mode?
2) How many people plan to kill POEs?
3) If someone kills, say, one of the goats recently auctioned... is the killer then required to pay the owner of the whistle roughly 450 plat kronar (the price of the last one sold) in reparation or face a lifetime of grief from the owner? Of course, that's if the owner isn't so grief stricken that they quit playing... And does the owner of the goat then have to relinquish ownership of the whistle should the goat's killer pay up?
This is one rather unsettling policy change... I sure won't ever own anything resembling a POE now.

Heh I tell ya what, if you own a goat you best be very careful who you piss off. I know if someone attacked me I wouldnt think twice about turning around and killing it instead of them. <hums>
When exactly is killing of POE's going to be permitted? I was under the impression doing so would instantly get you yanked up and in hot water. Which I totally understand for people going around randomly killing them... but never understand when it came to owner giving others consent. Is this going to change?
Just curious is all <g>

<<2) How many people plan to kill POEs?
My guess is that we'll have people lining up to kill them. Squadrons of Elite POE Crusaders will sweep across the lands, obliterating any and all POE in their path and killing the "owner" if he or she gets in the way. I realize that's a worst-case scenario, but I really don't expect anything different from most players.

Right... Most player. It's the fringe element that enjoys chaos and harrassment that you need to worry about. Look at the small number of chronic graverobbers... imagine giving them another tool to cause grief. Hooray for them!
I think the next step for DR is to allow people to blow up houses. Boy, ya know... this game is fun but I've always told my friends, "The one thing that would really make this game the greatest of all time is if the GMs would write a program for us to blow up people's homes."
