I know weapons cannot change templates using an LTB scroll. Is it possible to change nouns if they use the same template? Specifically, is it possible to change the noun from greataxe to marauder blade or two-handed sword (I have been told all three of those use the same template)?

We've been asked not to change weapon nouns in any cases.

I assume that the same applies to armor and shields?

How does one determine how much of something is the noun? Is it always a single word, or does it just depend? Take some crafted weapons for example. Is a "two-handed sword" just that? Or can it just be a "sword" after alteration.

>>Dbabiash: How does one determine how much of something is the noun? Is it always a single word, or does it just depend?

The tap is the full name of the item as seen when you TAP it or type INVENTORY.

In addition to the tap, each item has a "short name." The short name can often be seen in messaging when interacting with the item, shopping for specific items with the SHOP command, and (depending on which front-end you use) in the display of what you are holding. It consists of 1-3 words.

noun (always present): the single word you can use to interact with the item (for example, WIELD MY SWORD). The alteration rules dealing with noun changes refer to this word only.

functional adjective (usually present): an adjective that you can combine with the noun to interact with the item (for example, WIELD MY TWO-HANDED SWORD). Using this adjective is helpful when you have multiple items with the same noun but different adjectives.

non-functional adjective (rarely present): if the short name contains three words, one of the adjectives won't work when trying to interact with the item. For example, if you have "a black gem pouch," GET MY BLACK GEM POUCH won't work; you have to figure out whether "black" or "gem" is the functional adjective by trial and error (typing TAP MY BLACK POUCH and TAP MY GEM POUCH).

>>Dbabiash: Take some crafted weapons for example. Is a "two-handed sword" just that? Or can it just be a "sword" after alteration.

If you were altering your two-handed sword, you could not change the noun ("sword"), but you could change the entire tap, including the functional adjective.

For example, you could change your "two-handed sword" into "a silver sword with a wing-shaped crossguard" but not "a silver greatsword with a wing-shaped crossguard." You can also add or alter a look (what you see when you type LOOK MY SWORD), though if it's a crafted item with a maker's mark, your new design must incorporate the maker's mark.

Awesome, thanks for the detailed information. As of yet I have very little experience with alterations. I got my first and only one done a couple years ago, but I put it almost entirely into the hands of the merchant (who did a great job, I'm not complaining). Maybe this year will be the year I finally get my second alteration, so I have been doing some light reading on the subject.

Some reading material (if you have not already found it):

Additionally, if you are planning to work with a specific merchant at an event, that merchant's rules are often posted on his wiki page.

If you have any questions, feel free to IM me; I have a lot of experience with alterations, both getting and assisting.

If you have an left hand right hand box, area in your Front End, that should show what that item is. I've specifically asked during alterations to have things set up a certain way.

I.e. I had a safecracker's thigh bag. Safecracker bag to me is more rare, so instead of a thigh bag, they allowed the Safe bag (well it's safecracker bag), but that's that. This may not be available in a Scroll set-up, this was done person to person, merchant lounge style.

Noun changes on non armor/weapons are quite a bit more flexible. At that point, we allow synonyms to be used. Not all merchants allow this though, so sometimes you may need to ask.

Typical things that are allowed: robe -> robes, gown, dress, bilaud, sarrak, gamantang, etc.
Not allowed: (armor) cowl -> hat

Iffy but often allowed: bastard sword -> (something else) sword
Not allowed: greatsword -> (word)sword, (word) sword

Shields nouns tend to be allowed through, though merchants highly prefer you to keep the same noun. If you have a cooking pot lid shield, it's unlikely that it would be altered to a different noun. Also, you are likely to not get approved to turn a metal pavise shield into a cooking pot lid.

Hopefully this answered more questions than it raised.

Really? That's great. I've always thought that you cannot change an item from a Common noun to a racial noun.

Most general alterers will allow it because the item volumes/dimensions and weights are close enough for it to not be an issue. There may be some more specific rules for some though, like odaj (especially battle odaj), I think have more specific rules that GM Persida posted in the Rakash folders.
