Ships: A disappointment on 02/03/2017 05:30 PM CST

OOC: Years ago I played under the user name of Fishking. For a little while I was an Estate Holder as Fishking over a decade and a half ago. At the time, Estate Holders could buy their own private ships. (It was so long ago, I can't actually remember if I owned a ship. What can I say? I'm getting old and maybe developing dementia.) So one of the main reasons I joined the Estate Holders recently was to get my own ship, because I love playing a sea theme. It's why most of the current characters that I play are citizens of Ratha. But much to my disappointment, I just read on Elanthipedia that ships can no longer be bought. Now there maybe good reasons why this was done. After all, I don't know what goes on behind the scenes with coding, system resources, and human resources at Simutronics, but none the less I felt a big let down when I discovered this fact. Now, I'll probably still stay on as an Estate Holder, because there have been many changes since the last time I was an Estate Holder, and I have yet to experience those changes. But to be honest, I don't think I would have joined the Estate Holders recently if I had known this fact.

I mean this in the most respectful and friendly of ways, but this post was adorable. It's a little bit like someone from the '90s waking up from a coma and asking why no one is wearing Hammer pants. Ships have been out of the premium marketplace for so long that I can't even remember them ever being for sale, and I've been playing since '97.

That said, welcome back and welcome to trying the new premium. My favorite new changes:

1) Fang Cove autopath, which you can teleport to once an hour.
2) Extra inventory slots!
3) Extra type-ahead line.
4) Monthly raffle.

Also as a Trader you should know that there are shops in the Crossing plaza that are rentable only by premium Traders, so it should be a little easier to find a spot.

To semi quote one of the SGMs: each single ship consumes system resources on par with the entire Crossings city.

The ship code itself is a semi-reallistic horrific nightmare that no one on staff can touch for fear of making it violently poo itself to death then corrupt the entire game.

Each time a GM tries to adjust something minuscule with ship content we end up with ships lodging themselves half-way into the province itself because they overshot the docks.

Oh they can be bought, you just have to dump a fortune into sCoins and try to get them from a "quest".

This gets brought up a lot and it's not QUITE true.

It's just... kinda true.

Crossing both takes less system resources (in this context) than I think most people realize (Setting aside all the people IN it and all the outskirts, including most of the hunting areas), and that's the upper bounds of what a boat can consume. If there are multiple boats in use that happen to be in the system in the correct order they could all still only take as much as Crossing... or they could each take that much. It's kinda like a minimum file size sorta thing.

Either way, unlimited boat sales are extremely problematic with the existing set up.
