Rather than using a book, or even work-orders at first, the artistry skill uses a single tool. A transmutation kit. These are limited use and are in the society for purchase.
General steps:
- Put item to destroy in the kit (big warning)
- Turn kit (item locked).
- Put item to enhance in the kit. (big warning)
- Turn kit (item locked).
- Push button on kit (big warning, shows final item)
- Push button on kit confirm.
- Open kit and take out your new item.
Restrictions:
- Noun must be the same on both items.
- Only certain stats are copied per item.
- The difference in the change is what determines skill. This is a score determined by each kit.
- Failure is an option (no loss of either item) if the skill is unable to perform the transmutation. Less skill is required for small differences. Quality of the kit reduces skill requirements. Career/hobby = reduced skill requirements. Techniques = reduce skill requirements in the various fields. Each kit has their own branch + random techs like overcoming quality differences and transmuting broken materials, etc..
- All scripts on the former item are lost. The new item retains all scripts. So you could take special, do something armor and make it higher starts by destroying awesome stat armor in the process.
A Leatherworker's kit
- Leather/cloth/bone armor only. Copies protection, absorption, hindrance, and weight.
An Armorersmith's kit
- See tailor's kit for metal armors.
An Blacksmith's kit
- Copies speed, quality, and construction on blacksmithing tools.
An Weaponsmith's kit
- Copies speed, quality, and construction.
An Blacksmith's kit
- Copies speed, quality, and construction.
An Tailor's kit
- Copies size and dimensions
etc... These kits can be sold, but the services of the artisan would be the primary sale.

Sounds like a fun thing to see at an event! Though it essentially sounds like alterations...

The skill is outfitting. Artistry is a branch. I personally think it's fine for training, but it wouldn't be the optimal means.

That's kind of the point. Less GM time, more end-effort. It basically takes an item a GM created, and applies the stats of the item you want to use. This is a win/win. You get the look you want. GM time can be spent on "cool" without becoming over powered. Items are cycled (destroyed) more frequently as someone decides to change up or customize their look.

I can't imagine this training unless there was a failure option. TBH it kinda sounds like the dye system, which does have failure states, and isn't really a viable training option either.
Uzmam! The Chairman will NOT be pleased to know you're trying to build outside of approved zones. I'd hate for you to be charged the taxes needed to have this place re-zoned. Head for the manor if you're feeling creative.

For what it's worth, if I were going to train Outfitting (Artistry), I'd want messaging that indicated I was a skilled artisan and using my own skills to enhance or change the item.
That said the kit idea is neat and I could see something like that as a fun prize (with limits) or possibly as an alternative messaging system that achieves the same result as crafting.
