I think some synergistic crafting could have potential here. A bard wants a magical instrument, so they lay down the base enchantment. Then to add new functionality to it they seek out mages from other guilds. Say a warrior mage to add a balance enchaning augery to it. Or maybe a paladin to grant it the ability to provide a strength bonus. Then bards would have an instrument that doubles as a somewhat unique rune of sorts.

I think the biggest hurdle to overcome with musical skills is being able to make them worthwhile outside of the Bard guild.
Currently there is really only one reason to train a musical skill for a non-Bard and that ability can easily be circumvented by a Cleric spell.
If there were more reasons to train musical skills, outside of guild requirements, I think there might be more interest from the general population.
I like the idea of enchanted instruments or music boxes that hold enchantes inside them similar to runestones. I fear however, that if activation of these types of devices required musical skills, there would be absolutely no market for them and no reason to make them for a Bard.
I also like the idea of ambient music playing of a certain level being able to produce inherent skill bonuses, similar to the spirit regeneration ability. I could definitely see music as being an aid for other crafting skills during a crafting process (i.e. while playing a sonata, you get a bonus to artistry or while playing a concerto you get a bonus to carving, etc.)
Just some preliminary ideas.

Yep, we've discussed this and we're going to be doing some work on the regeneration of stats in the not too distant future and we'll probably work in some music related perks there.

Well, to be fair musical skills have been around a lot longer than most of the others, so its not surprising. But if you think that means we have forgotten music, you'd be wrong. Music systems will continue to see TLC over the coming year(s).

There will be. Since Play 2.0 we've added ways to help recover spirit faster, gain devotion, and improve soulstate via music. We've also added the potential for NPCs, critters, and devices to respond to music (as witnessed in the P5 bard guildhall). There'll be more coming.

Really, GENT laid out most of the concerns I have. And I'm glad to see that the GMs understand them.
I really have nothing to add, but I am enjoying all of the discussions. I can't wait.

Hmm, I forgot about these other things.
I really like the idea of music being able to boost 'non-traditional' stats like soul state, devotion and bodily stats like stamina, fatigue and spirit.
And I haven't really thought about the potential that is inherent in playing music TO or AT things like NPCs, critters and devices. I'll have to think more on that!

Ooh and maybe with engineering we could make electric guitars and then we could have an awesome guitar duel like at the end of the Six-String Samurai.

Bard plays a glorious solo on his harp. The crowd is screaming for more, women of all races are throwing undergarments onto the stage. Several people even look like they've been mental blasted they are in such awe.
The bard scoffs disdainfully at the 'tog barbarian on the other side of the stage.
The barbarian starts to play on his lute. His fingers fumble all over the stings. The crowd begins to laugh and shout for the bard to play again.
The barbarian shrugs at the crowd and throws his lute at the bard. The lute lands an awsome strike to the bard's head. The lute exlodes driving splinters into the bards head, neck, and chest while the strings are wrapped around his neck and cut deeply in. The bard is stunned! So is the crowd!
The barbarian collects the trophy cup and fills it with booze. He tears off the bard's left leg. Finnaly the barbarian stomps off stage munching on the elf haunch and guzzling ale.

What can I say? They wanted a music shop in the Tog district, and when I thought of musical Togs the first thing that came to mind (well, other than a Tog beating some poor critter over the head and considering the squeals music) was the Country Bear Jamboree. I couldn't resist adding skiffle instruments at that point. And bagpipes to match the hideous Scottish accent of most Dwarves, of course.

Couple weeks late on responding to this, but if you dig the skiffle stuff, Dart, perhaps you can add a "room-mounted" (like the harpsichords) tea-chest bass to some of the taverns? That would be awesome.
