Anyone able to help me figure out what I'm doing wrong here?

>get cloth
You get a cleaning cloth from inside your almond-colored pack.
>clean zill with cloth
You cannot figure out how to do that.
>rub zill with cloth
You cannot figure out how to do that.
>rub cloth with zill
You don't know how to do that with the zills.
>clean zill
Clean a pair of golden zills with what?
>clean zill with my cloth
You cannot figure out how to do that.

Try shake. Some of the weather-proof instruments use odd verbs.

That looks like a cleaning cloth from a Society. The only thing those are good for is switching how your crafted goods look. You need chamois cloth from a music store. They are what you use to clean instruments.

It probably is this. I would suggest getting a rag from the bard shop so it will have a different noun and will be harder to get confused. Rags and cloths clean the same, just one sounds nicer. Also if your instrument is wet, you need to WIPE it with the cloth to dry it off as well as WRING the cloth to dry it out.

Yea this, I'm constantly accidentally grabbing my cleaning cloth instead of my cham cloth. Plus I keep a stack of wool cloth in my backpack for crafting and it just gets all sorts of confusing.
