This idea would utilize and teach both teaching and scholarship. Perhaps a small amount of whatever craft skill is involved through the process as well.

Much of this idea is based on the assumption (hope) that there will be templates, patterns, instructions, blue-prints etc. available in game that we can reference to keep track of what we have learned to create and how. Something along the lines of spellbooks or songbooks where you can read the book to see notes on items you know how to craft etc.

I envision basic templates being available for purchase from stores, merchants or NPC craftspeople. STUDYing these templates would teach a bit of scholarship and determine if the template was useable based on your skill. We could then SCRIBE the template into our portfolio which would teach a bit more scholarship and a small amount of teaching.

Once we have learned some basic templates and want to learn how to make more advanced or better items we could go to libraries, forges, music halls, etc. and RESEARCH the templates we all ready know. Skill in the appropriate trade, and scholarship to a lesser extent, would be the determing factor in how many of the templates we can combine in our research as well as the ultimate determinant in whether or not our research is successful. This would teach scholarship and a bit of the trade skill involved. As an example let's say I know the basic template for creating a scimitar but I want to create one with a bit more balance. I go to a forge and <RESEARCH scimitar for balance>. Once the research is completed successfully I will now know the steps neccessary to create "a well-balanced scimitar". Or some such. Depending on the item being researched certain consumables may be required for the research such as metals for forging, wood and glue for instrument crafting or fletching, etc.

Once we have RESEARCHed a new pattern we can RECORD it into our portfolio. This step would teach teaching (since the act of recording it entails making it clear and understandable, kind of like a textbook).

Once the template is successfully recorded into our portfolio we could create tablets, blueprints, etc. for mass consumption, so that those who do not wish to research the template themselves can purchase them. Or we can teach the templates to each other in a manner similar to the way smoke images or horse feats are currently taught (this should teach teaching very well since it is time consuming and requires doing nothing else for the period of instruction in most cases). Perhaps even include LECTURE to teach more than one person at a time.

So, in summary:

STUDY <template> to determine if we are skilled enough to use them
SCRIBE <template> to permanently learn them or to create saleable templates for mass consumption(teaches scholarship, small amount of teaching, perhaps some amount of the trade skill)
RESEARCH <template> to discover advanced applications (teaches scholarship, and some amount of the trade skill)
RECORD <template> to translate our research into a useable form (teaches teaching)
TEACH <template> to transfer our craft knowledge to another player
