Seems like an appropriate place to ask how phase 2 is going on the release of player-makeable textbooks...

Re: Textbooks? on 12/31/2007 07:16 AM CST
I think I've wanted a IG way to construct a thief journal for almost 6 years now. Mostly because I keep moving computers or having system crashes and remembering all the passways, abilities, passwords ect is hard : / I'm rather excited to see if this is a reality, I thought spellbooks would do it but aparently not.
Re: Textbooks? on 12/31/2007 07:59 AM CST
Well, I think I overheard Ssra (when chatting with Farman - overheard not eavesdropping!) say that textbooks were "axed for now" due to resource issues. All that text would need to be maintained in a database and the queries to the database would slow down the game too much with the current tech.
Correct me if I'm wrong, Ssra.

That was an assist in regard to spellbooks and the ability to add notes. The way this was intended to work in DR1 would require pulling data from the hard drive each time and that would slow the game down (which is why it's not done).
Textbooks are not axed. We actually have some in the game now with limited availability through a merchant.
However, I should say I don't anticipate us creating a system where we can sit and read books all day then go out and slay a dragon or open a moon gate to another plane of existence. ;P

Ahh ok, well thanks for that clarification. I guess I got textbooks and notebooks confused.

>I'm pretty sure it was limited to spellbooks and the ability to add notes.
That's correct, Ssra, my question was about spellbook notepads exclusively, since you had generously come down to investigate the spellbook case fix released yesterday and I figured I'd try for a freebie ;) And just to be complete Ssra did mention that the notepads are something they've wanted to activate for a long time but just can't--yet and for the foreseeable future--due to the existing technical limitations.
Continuing on the textbook front, my ears perked up with this--
>We actually have some [textbooks] in the game now with limited availability through a merchant.
Does this mean that the textbook merchant is live and available somewhere in the game right now? AFAIK there has only been a one-time very limited release, on the order of four or five years ago at this point.
For anyone who isn't aware, textbooks have been discussed recently (and several times before) in the Empath boards. Given Empaths' huge teaching req's, a lot of us feel that textbook-making as an Empath-centric creation system would be a great way to finally utilize and honor all the work we've always done in the relevant skills.

Weren't those textbooks just skill-boosters? Kinda like a one-skill RPA, where you read it and then went out and did things better than usual?

No. We'll probably dust it off by the end of the year if we actively develope a textbook creation system.
Good paper was crazy expensive and exceedingly rare in the old days before the printing press... heck, most people couldn't even read and write.
Making a book probably won't be cheap.

True, but we have a precedent in DR with origami paper. 125k/sheet retail if you buy a pad, I'd be happy with something in that area. It seems paper isn't so rare in Elanthia.
Even better would be a paper creation system to go along with it, which could be applied as a raw material input to a lot of other items.
