Is there a message or some indication that an area has been mined out? I don't really want to have to prospect after each blow.

I think there is a "you're done" message, but I've only ever seen it in the Wicked Burrow Mine, and not even consistently there. I don't remember the wording, but it says something like 'the area is exhausted, and it'll be some time before it can be mined again'.
I've also noticed this messaging: "Targeting an exposed glassy surface, you swing your wide shovel vigorously, shattering the stone and revealing a darker material below." It seems to only show up when the area is mined out.

Does one always get this message? (at least if you don't screw stuff up before you get to the metal)

Re: Mined out on 07/04/2011 02:23 PM CDT
My hunch is that it may be possible to tell when a room is tapped out, but I've never paid close enough attention to the messaging to figure it out. As one example, I have highlighted the text string:
"Black, crumbly stone gives way beneath the assault"
For certain types of rooms (mostly sedimentary rocks), that message ALWAYS means that the room is tapped out. In other types of rooms, you can frequently get that message while mining a room that still has plenty of rock left. So it seems like maybe there are certain messages for rooms with each type of rock, and that you may be able to tell that your room is empty if the messaging doesn't match the correct type for the rock you were just mining. I haven't really paid enough attention yet to tell for sure yet though

No, you can get stone without seeing that message first. I've gotten it numerous times with the Sparks fly message without seeing that.

You see evidence of mineral deposits and are certain a decent quantity remains to be found.
This area is composed of igneous rock layers.

You are certain that basalt can be mined here.
Miners stand ready to trade resources in for deeds. Just PUSH any mined up stone or metal, and they'll take care of the rest.

Are you thinking of this message? It's the only one I recall seeing that comes close except for a disaster message. This was after cleaning a room then PROSPECT CAREFUL and cleaning it again.

I understand that, but I don't actually care about stone, just when an area is mined out. Am I correct in saying that, barring an accident, if you mine an area from just respawned to empty you will always see the "A spill of stone reveals the faint glimmer of metal beneath!" message?

Correct, that is always the start of where you are getting metal. As long as no one else has mined before you, you will see that.

Re: Mined out on 07/04/2011 05:54 PM CDT
What I've been doing is prospecting after each find. With a shovel, at least, I am not having problems with continuing to mine after the area being depleted. I haven't tried it with a pickax, since I'm mostly after random stone for my carving work orders, but I'd imagine that it's less reliable there.
Re: Mined out on 07/04/2011 07:18 PM CDT
Gah, can't believe I typed it that way. My apologies. Should have previewed it.
The vast majority of the time you will see the Spill of stone message before you will start getting metal in a re-spawned room, but there are occasions where you will get metal on the Sparks fly message without first getting the Spill of stone message. That happened twice in the hour of mining I just did and I know the rooms were fresh.

i just find it disappointing that with over 220 foraging i can't seem to find much other than rocks, even though when i prospect there is supposed to be nickel or tin. i was mining in dirge mine and kept striking the bitter smell thing, did the prospect danger.

I have just over 100 foraging and have been finding metals just fine in Dusk Ogres - Lumium, Oravir, Nickel, Tin and so on. Sure I get about 5 to 1 rocks, but each mining trip gets me a fair amount of metal. Also, I am getting small nuggets, but also large ones so it seems to be all sizes are obtainable.
I just love that this moves foraging, I'd mine even if it didn't.

Cool. Thanks for that info.

Pickaxe your way through to the fist nugget/or the spill of stone message, then swap to a shovel, and see if that helps.

I find it disappointing that with the same foraging, I'm finding all kinds of metals, but still haven't found anything rarer than platinum, no matter how many rooms i mine out.
One key indicator of when a room is close to being mined out, you'll notice that the metal drops you're getting are 'better' than the drops you would get on average before. When you get close to mining an area out, your chances of getting better drops are increased, and I've noticed it many times. Mostly I'll be mining a vein, getting small/tiny/medium nuggets, then suddenly find two or three large/huge/massive nuggets pretty close together. Thats a pretty good indication you've broken the 'scattering' line.

At some point you should see this message. Kodius posted in Plat that "A spill of stone reveals the faint glimmer of metal beneath!" is the message for when you can start extracting metal+stone, and not just stone.
No idea on getting metal with the sparks flying thing prior to that. Particularly since that message seems to have gone haywire with RT.

Pretty sure the skill has nothing to do with how often you find rare stuff, it only helps you get more of stuff that you find once you find it.

Yep.
For what it's worth, I've done a ton of mining, and while I've had well over 400 or more in platinum, gold, silver, niniam, darkstone, I've had only 100ish in lumium and electrum, and only 20-30 in kertig and damite. I've never found haralun and glaes, and the only bit of animite I've found was tiny nugget from a random lucky drop.
