I think vein-detection can be deduced from the data that I'm collecting, since I'm getting the size of and type of items found, so some post-processing can be to determine if there was a vein there. Otherwise, I don't know how to detect the vein. At the moment, my character generally cannot see what metals are in an area, but any metals/stones that are seen there is also logged.
Here's a quick sample of the log file as it stands right now: http://pastebin.com/SHw8D335

>>In my experience, there's common (coal, iron, copper, etc), uncommon (silver, gold, darkstone maybe), rare (platinum, lumium, niniam), and very rare (damite, kertig, haralun).
Very rare: damite, kertig, haralun, glaes
Rare: Niniam, lumium, platinum, gold, darkstone, electrum
Common: everything else
The system does not consider silver a rare find. All rares, whether uncommon like darkstone or super rare like kertig, often have an equal chance of popping, though this varies by mine and rock type. However, regardless of mine or rock type, silver doesn't random pop, and neither does dolomite, coal, bronze, etc.
After 3000 volumes of mining data, I concluded silver's not any more common than copper or limestone, and trashed my ingots.

>>And you're mining why? I'd assume to sell to smiths...
To find rare metals for personal use, because I didn't feel like paying tons for a weapon or piece of armor.
I'm not mining anymore. The data's right there though, if anyone wants it. A vein of silver has the same pop chance (~12-15%, depending on rock type) as limestone or coal or anything like that. A "super rare" (damite, glaes, kertig, haralun currently) has a chance that is well below 1%, and uncommons are somewhere like 3-5% (again, varying by mine and rock type).
If you find silver useful, by all means! I think people overlook the more common minerals and metals, even if comparatively speaking, the gains they will get from using damite instead of lumium will be meager at best (lumium, for example, can easily cap small/medium armworn shields, and usually at half the weight of a damite shield). Silver's not useless, if you smith. But, percentage-wise and system-wise, it's not a rare metal, and counting it among your rares will heavily skew your results.

I've run through a mine and found 4 or 5 silver nodes close to eachother. Despite the fact I constantly smelt it with bronze I always have a good 100+ volume at all times.
Its not rare at all.
People are just mixing up real life "rare metal" with IG "rare metal". Gold is just as uncommon as platinum, gold however is pickier about its rock type.
