No reason why not. They could easily be weapons, and you will be able to use other weapons for mining (though depending on the item, less effective and more prone to damage). If you wanted to chop away at a granite wall with an ice pick, I'm not stopping you. Though your ice pick may not last long...

Make sure that you sharpen their heads first, so you get the best damage on the wall.

Of course, if you want to keep your gnome healthy, you will want to allow it to wear a spiked helm first.
