Mining Question on 06/18/2012 02:09 PM CDT

So, I've dabbled a bit in mining and I have a few questions. I'm sure they've been asked before, but, well, these boards are irritating sometimes. Sooo:

1) What does Foraging increase, exactly? I'm assuming that the metal types are a random spawn, so does foraging just affect how much you get from each vein?
2) Same for Perception. How does that come into play? Is it what determines if you notice danger?
3) Are veins of different sizes? Or are they all the same size?
4) I saw somewhere strength helps lower RT for actions. Do any other stats factor in?

The key thing I'm trying to find out is if someone has low perc/foraging, is it worth their while to mine? Or would it be better to train up perc/foraging in other ways and go to mining once ranks have accrued?

Thanks!

>>so does foraging just affect how much you get from each vein?

Yup!

>>How does that come into play?

Just helps with the success/accuracy/information provided via different PROSPECTs. Danger warning signs are just generic timed atmos that anyone can see.

>>Are veins of different sizes? Or are they all the same size?

You'll see how much material is available in PROSPECT. It goes from scattering to substantial. With a good PROSPECT CAREFUL you can kick it up to enormous.

>>I saw somewhere strength helps lower RT for actions. Do any other stats factor in?

I don't think any stats factor in. Keep in mind that all stats/skill/tools/etc do is increase your chance for a lower RT. It's not like power perception where after you get X amount of Y you'll always hit 3 seconds or something. You're just more likely to get lower roundtimes (this is how the new crafting works, too). That said, it's probably safer to not mine as fast as possible, what with the dangers that can trigger before you get the warning messaging.

>>The key thing I'm trying to find out is if someone has low perc/foraging, is it worth their while to mine?

It's worth it, but:
1) You'll have trouble learning what stuff is in the room you're mining.
2) You won't get a lot of that stuff that you do mine out.

>>Or would it be better to train up perc/foraging in other ways and go to mining once ranks have accrued?

Personally, I'd rather have five volumes of kertig I just happen to get from dumb luck of not knowing I'm in a kertig room and/or having them randomly drop in another room (all rooms have a minor chance of dropping a very rare metal in the middle of mining out something else... the more common the metal the higher the chance of something rare randomly popping out) than collect a thousand piles of branches I'll never use.

It also seems to affect the quality of the metal you get.

Thanks guys! So far I've been enjoying it, though I haven't really found anything worthwhile yet. I'll keep cranking away and hope for the best!

I find mining to be a pretty nice break from grinding out ranks. It's kind of like playing the lottery, except you have the opportunity to improve your chances of winning through more skill.

Mining's nice, I do it a lot and make some good money doing it. A couple suggestions:

1) I wouldn't bother till ~250 ranks of appraisal, foraging, and perception. This is a personal preference, but I have found it to be a nice benchmark. You'll start seeing the metals every time, you will get more volumes when you find something worth keeping, and you will be relatively safe from the explosions that can be hard to avoid at lower ranks.

2) Very important to go in with no expectations, in my experience. Once you start counting the number of veins you've mined since hitting haralun, you'll pull your hair out quick.

Get speed tools if you haven't. Lots of Traders have them out, I've seen them in all three of the mainland market plazas.

I'll respectfully disagree with the sub-250 ranks benchmark; I'd rather spend the time mining and training those skills and have the chance to get some uncommon metal in the process. It's also better than gathering rocks and kicking them. I'm a dwarf, I belong in three places: a mine, a forge an alehouse.

Hope I see better results once my skill gets there, but I'm doing OK. Only managed to get caught in a cave in once.

You get better experience collecting rocks (bits per action), and you can play an instrument and probably listen to a class at the same time.

From a perspective of getting rare mats, you're also better off appraising every room after a timed repop instead of just continually mining one trash room over and over again waiting for it to repop. My measurements are only anecdotal but I'm probably gaining 2-3 times more rare material selectively looking for rooms via prospect rather than just mining one room till it repops substantial and moving to the next. I'm definitely gaining significantly more.

Not much use playing the lotto if you can't see half of the numbers to know if you've won.

Any idea how often the repop is?

Every so often a check will trigger. If the room isn't being mined in at the time (or something like that), it might then repop. If the room is cleaned out, it will definitely repop during the check.

Good to know; I'm new to the system, so I didn't know when the rare drop were supposed to occur. With Riverhaven being a ghost town when I'm here, I usually don't see any folks, so me listening to a class are slim.

So, you just prospect a room a couple times, make a few digs and move to another room?

Digging it starts a timer that prevents repop. Best way to do it is check the whole mine. Choose a room to mine out; wait for repop, check the whole mine again. The whole mine is repop-checked at the same time.

I just wish there was a way to sell the material without finding a willing- and awake merchant. I did finally sell the platinum I dug up, and got a decent price for it, just being able to go sell it as easy as a pelt would make it more worthwhile to me.

I may play with it more, but seems like there are easier ways to learn foraging, appraisal and perception.
