So I couldn't find anywhere else to post this...When I prospect sometimes I can see both the stone and metal, sometimes just the stone and sometimes nothing at all. Is this skill based or just random? Does anyone know?

>Skill based. Mostly perception and appraisal, I think, with maybe some outdoorsmanship. Somewhere in the 200-300 range you'll start getting the metal every time.

250 average (750 total) in perception, appraisal, and outdoors will let you see it nearly every time. There's a random factor, and I think stats modify it some.
