<<Out of serious curiosity, if you are not a professional chief and thus don't make your livelihood from creating and preparing unique meals, why would you want to hide your secrets from what I can only presume is largely your friends and family?
You know, I don't really know the the answer to that question because I and my family are more than happy to share any sort of recipe. But it could have something to do with the relationship that's created with the food. By keeping the recipe, the eater has to come back to the cook if they'd like to have it again.
On a related note, sometimes food just tastes better by a certain cook. Spanikopita just doesn't taste right unless my grandmother made it. My mom, aunt, brother, and I all have tried using her recipe, but it is just missing something.

Because they might sell the recipe to a big company and get the money I deserve instead! On a serious note, I think the tradition to hide recipes in my family stems from the local fairs with the food contests. There was/is a lot of competition between friends at such events or bake offs. The recipe is the foundation for the pie that wins. Maybe someone else could make it better therefore, it is not wise to let the recipe out if you want to win the blue ribbon.
