Huge Green Bay fan here. I'm a cheesehead at heart, though I live in New York.

While I'd never consider myself a cheesehead in polite conversation, I am a full-blooded Sconie.

I'll spare you all the MSN > MKE stuff though. :P

I was born north of Milwaukee, in Port Washington. All my extended family still lives there too. I love that area.

That one is ALWAYS a dead giveaway.

That and asking where the bubbler is (uniquely WI).

I'm not sure how I'm supposed to "hear" that example. Are you stressing a long A like in "pagan", a short A like "cabin", or the O sound like "Saab"?

Hee, I was in Milwaukee yesterday with my mother-in-law. Wish I had seen this before then. And I love the spice store on Old World 3rd Street. Weee I spend more money there than the cheese or sausage shops. Nice spices to play with!

It's the long 'a' sound, like "pagan". Pronounced pay-gen. It's ALMOST a diphthong, but not quite.

That's in contrast to the 'Coastie' version, which is more like the short 'a' in "bad". 'Coastie' meaning either coast, or more generally, anywhere outside the Upper Midwest and the South.

When my girlfriend worked retail in MN, she delighted in asking customers "do you want to beg for that?" [do you want a bag for that]

Because in the midwest accent, "bag" sounds like "beg."

I live only about 20 minutes west of Port Washington. I like that area! I love it here! Only lived here a few years, though. I am from Chicago-land originally and been all over about 8 different states before here. I think I may stay put for a while now. Heh... traveler at heart!
