*NOTE: Before you participate in this discussion, I want to request that while we want your replies, comments, suggestions, etc. about the proposed new system, we do not want any replies, comments, suggestions, etc. that have any references to, requests to change, or complaints about Gwethsmashers. Obviously, any new system will result in a review of how they work and we're not going down that road right now. Any replies that mention Gwethsmashers will be removed. Just letting you know in advance! *

A Gwethdesuan System rewrite is slated to take place in 2010. One of the most important things we need to make a decision on is the basic fundamental way the new system will work. We know that different people get different things from talking on the gweth and since we have an opportunity to make some big changes, we'd like to start this discussion and hear what you think (::rimshot::).

(With any of these options, I think I want to make sure to point out that we'll very likely have a Newbie/Mentor Only channel, as well as potentially a sales channel for Traders to sell things on. Neither of these things (or any other potential channels) are up for discussion at this point. Let's focus on the basics first.)

We have three options that we're currently considering:

1) One "Game Wide" channel, much like we had in the "old days". Anyone could hear anyone, anywhere, at any time, much like the Chatter system in Plat and The Fallen, but we'd also very likely allow for individual channels to be set up and joinable (or toggleable). This is similar to how World of Warcraft has their chat system set up. On the upside, this would give everyone access to one single "gweth community" and folks could better relay important news and happenings much more quickly, on both the main channel as well as the potential joinable channels. On the downside, it would likely increase gweth traffic quite a bit, at least on the main channel.

2) A "Range-based" system, much like we have now (but one that works much better under the hood). This would mean that if you were in Theren, people in Leth couldn't hear you. Unlike the current "off or on" system, we'd build the zones to overlap, so there would still be distinct areas, but there would be places that would allow bleed-over. As you traveled out of one "zone" toward another, you would hear conversations from both zones, until you got outside the overlap area, at which point you'd only hear conversations from your new zone. The pros of this system is that it would maintain the smaller individual communities that you have now. Cons would be that it would also maintain the isolation of those communities.

3) A more complex "Range-based" system, with a different sort of overlap than Option 2. In this set-up, there would be larger zone overlap, but the range mechanics would take individual positions into account a bit more. As an example, if we had a zone for The Crossing, and two people started a conversation. One of them heads up the NTR and one was headed to Leth. As they got farther and farther apart, they would eventually stop being able to hear each other, but anyone in The Crossing would be able to hear both of them (until they fully left the zone overlap area).
