What does this messaging mean?

"You sense that this Kertigen orb is not deemed worthy to hold your required sacrifice. Perhaps another would work at this time"

That sounds correct to me as well. Two orbs at a time is the limit before they start not working.

I have never had more than two simultaneous orbs ever work. The first two work and the third is always broken. It's been like this as long as I can remember.

If you are referring to chaining favour orbs together by getting two orbs, filling the first one, depositing it, getting a third orb to replace the first, filling the second, depositing it, getting a fourth to replace the second, filling the third, and so on then that is still only ever two at a time.

The break point depends on your current number of favors. I think I can do 3 from 0, then 2, then 3+.

I cycle through many characters getting favors, maybe that's what i'm thinking about. all my chars range from 10-50 favors

You may have resolved your issue already, but I received the exact same message when I had tried rubbing the orb immediately after I picked it up. Once I had carried it back to the temple altar and tried it there then everything was fine.
