I've been having a bit of trouble with my first ever treasure map here, so I'm hoping I can crowdsource some good ideas for hunting this tricksy chest down.
The map has a large 'X' marked in the middle of it. Near the marking, you can see a sketch of the opening of a cavern. Contour lines drawn along the map indicate that the destination is located near sea level, and empty space surrounds the 'X'. Straight lines have been drawn from the center, pointing north, east, southeast, south, and northwest. From other markings on the map, you guess that the destination is somewhere nearby. Judging by your surrounding environment, you will find the treasure in this province.
Does the "opening of a cavern" mean that it's actually inside of a cave? Or just near a cave?
I've noticed that on other maps posted here in this forum, other people have maps where the X is surrounded by farms or wavy grass... so the fact that this X is surrounded by nothing means... middle of a windswept plain?
I've narrowed the location down to:
Near or within Shard
South of Fayrin's Rest and the Darkmist Moor
North of Darkling Wood
East of Shard Gryphons/Antelopes
I haven't been able to find any rooms that match the list of exits, either via Ranik's maps or Automapper in Genie. On the bright side, I've gotten to explore more of Shard and its environs looking for the treasure.

Do the directions on the map change at times? It might end up being in the Hive.

Darn.
Just as an aside, I don't think OUT counts as a direction for these maps. I know up and down don't. So you might have a map that is pointing to a room that just shows north, but the room it's in might actually be north/down.
