Ok so I saw the logarithmic nature of wisdom increases and I pretty much thought there was no reason to increase mentals past 13 or so. Didn't think long term, and now it's hard to get any primary skills mindlocked. Current stats are 14 wisdom, 11 intel, 10 discipline. What should I increase first to get the most learning benefit? I plan to increase all to 20 at least, just would like to see which would give the biggest benefit as soon as possible, since those mentals are so darn expensive.
I tend to stay locked in one skill for as long as possible while hunting. Barbarian, tog. Thanks in advance for any good advice.

Well let me say, raising mental stats won't do anything to help you acheive mindlock any faster. In fact, it may have the reverse effect, but you need to be aware that reaching mindlock is not the end-all, be-all of experience gain. I mean, if you had a wallet that could only hold $5 and I had one that could hold $40, you might find it easier to keep your wallet full (mind lock), but even if mine is half full (muddled), I still have more money than you. If you're not reaching mind lock, you're not challenging yourself hard enough. Tell us which skills you have trouble with, then tell us what you're doing to train those skills, and we can help you from there in finding more appropriate methods to train.

Learning aside, increased mentals will help you in some contests of magic.
If I were you, I would start with discipline. And work on getting everything up to 15, then 20. But that's just me.

<<I have the opposite problem. My armor locks so quickly, I waste most of the experience I could be gaining. Would you train intelligence to get a bigger wallet or wisdome to make the money fly out faster?>>
Get used to it Geldrad. The way I counteract this is training multiple armors. Madigan suggested to me a month or two back swapping out greaves, so now I wear HP chest/arms, LP hands and helm and swap out HC & LC legs. Keeps everything moving wonderfully and I don't feel like I waste as much.
I did recently up quite a bit of my mentals while backtraining, so I'll let you know the effect of that when (if?) I get back to training regularly.

Having trouble locking light crossbow, parry, and evasion. They pretty much do not lock unless the swarm is so big I'm about to die. My regular weapons take a really long time of constant hacking (30 min or so) to lock, but I'm not really having an issue there.
I've tried bone wolves and dancing with 3 doesn't get parry past learning, 4+ can kill me. Same with rock trolls, only 2 and 3, respectively. I have my stance set at 100% parry, 80% evasion. I tried fire maidens/armed fire sprites and couldn't even touch them after a dozen swings of the sword, so I'm worried about a critical attack that will take off my head. The charts say sand sprites are just about on par with fire maidens and armed fire sprites, are they going to tear me up too?

You've reached the cap for bone wolves.
Sand sprites carry daggers and are considerably easier than fire sprites. They should teach you wonderfully.

What I do is randomly choose Intelligence or Wisdom at rollup and then using the 600 starting TDPs train only that one stat. The severe stats-jacking you'll be doing to yourself is easily ignoreable at novicely circles, and by training only that one stat you will have reduced the problem to a one-stat situation.
I suggest that you roll as close as possible to the guild you want to join, though, because rank-derived TDPs don't come fast at those levels and being unable to join a guild because you need to train 6 times yet don't have enough TDPs for one train is a bummer.

Oh, I forgot about negative TDPs! For some reason, I was operating under the assumption it prevented you from completing the process (what? You think we work on credit?!).
Still, you should minimize that as much as possible given the severe stats-jacking. Too much and you'll probably start entering a period where you might need to raise stats and still be unable to.

Well it worked. Went to blood wolves and everything locked in minutes. Thanks for the advice everyone. I think those 'what to hunt' charts are in need of updating, they say that blood wolves/sand sprites are the same difficulty as armed fire sprites and fire maidens. Not in my experience.
Re: Need advice - neglected mentals on 01/09/2008 11:04 AM CST
I do think that the armed fire sprites and the maidens got uptweaked at some point. They are considerably more difficult than the WTH says. Most of it's a good general guideline though.
On the other hand, we sometimes screw up and do something popular. We're working on that, though- GM Dartenian

As a paladin, first thing you need to do is go to a multi-armor setup. I suggest the arrangement Alaxndr uses (half plate and rotate greaves). Make sure you keep HP on your head, no matter your arrangement.
As a paladin, if you are a lock and rest trainer, get a bigger wallet.
As a paladin, if you are a continuous lock trainer (i.e. you stay in combat the majority of the time), then get rid of money faster.
Using your analogy of course. Others I am sure will have different opinions.

True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.
