Okay, I had huge insomnia the other night, and was without a computer. So I laid in bed for three hours thinking of ideas for the barbarian guild in the future...which isn't easy really, because there are things like 1. Feasiblity and 2. Do-ability and 3. Not infringing on another guild.
Anyway, I was thinking about meditations and all the ones people had mentioned as well as my own...Many of the suggestions and ideas were for combat-like things which makes sense as we are the creme-de-creme of combat. Then I realized though, usually when one meditates...they zone out. A lot of times it requires someone to stay still or at least to be doing something very repetitive so that they go into a state of trance. Meaning...something is so easy or familiar to you that you don't have to think about it. While I guess when we underhunt, that may be the case, as you dodge and parry without even noticing almost from a goblin or troll or whatever (fill in your easy critter here), if you were hunting at level (without dances) or above level, you would constantly need to "think"...re-adjust...to whatever punches a critter would throw at you, making it very difficult to "zone out" or meditate.
So all this made me wonder what meditations should be for. In general, I like the idea of them. I mainly see them for some sort of non-direct combat ability. I once a while ago suggested a meditation that helped regulate breathing to help with underwater swimming (since I don't believe we can have air bubble or other spells casted on us). Which for the moment, most would find this useless...I think if underwater combat ever came out, it would have a use as we could stay underwater longer.
Anyway, my point is I think meditations shouldn't be directly linked to combat. Do you think I am crazy?

I believe that meditations should be related to preparing FOR combat. Rather than whipping out the blade, charging into the midst of the fray, hacking wildly, roaring and berserking like mad, you would spend time to prepare yourself, both physically and mentally. Meditations like the one you suggest in your post, to regulate breath, might not only be used to help in underwater swimming, but with reducing fatigue lost from swinging heavy weapons over long periods of time. Another could be an 'ironskin' ability, to focus and control your muscles to toughen your skin. There are many other possibilities, but like you said, it is quite hard to not think of something that another guild will say 'No, mine!' to.

I would go further into suggesting that, given the past talk of different barbarian "paths" and all, that if indeed some real nice, useful, almost-uber pre-combat meditations were released into the game, that one restriction to using them would be the inability to use berserk for a matter of time either while under the conditions of the meditation, or even possibly a short bit of time after the effects wear off. The idea stems from the nature of what a berserking frenzy is currently represented as in-game via the ability messaging, and the idea that meditations require a sort of purity of mind and/or, primarily, a deep focus/concentration.
Me.

I would think that, since the paths idea was nixed, a Barbarian who has mastered control (read: very high-level) of his or her emotions could almost instantly end a meditation nearly instantaneously and enter a berserker frenzy. Of course, once that kind of control was reached, they could also feasibly end a berserk at will. ::ponders::

>>Ahh, I was not aware of this (took a 7+mos. break from DR). Too bad though, i thought it could have had some potential.
GMs decided not to limit us to only half our abilities as we grew in the guild. Of course, depending on our training style, we'll still be better at one type or the other.
