We couldnt ask for a better gift than the warpaint...til now. I do hope you, Iayn, are now freed up a little to tinker with meditations. Ill suggest some of my more notable ideas if I may.
I see meditations as taking several (uninterupted) moments to be succesful. Perhaps the meditator should also be kneeling or sitting. The effects of the medtations would range from a few minutes to half an hour depending on various conditions of the meditation and meditator. Meditations cannot be stacked with each other and there sould be a decent down time between them. Meditations should be stackable with dances, roars, or berserks, or combonations of the above. Meditate (fire) could also be incorporated into the system and work similar to how it does now. Meditate warpaint or other barb items that use that command would not be concidered a 'meditation' and could be used in conjunction with meditations.
Meditate <self>: Inner fire regeneration boost
Meditate blood: The more one bleeds, the stronger one gets.
Meditate bone: Tunes a barbarian to a single piece of their armor for a personal stat boost.
Meditate mind: Wisdom and Intellegence boost.
Meditate spirit: Halts memory decay in the dead, (must be under the meditation at time of death),and boosts spirit regeneration in the living.
Meditate Steel: Tunes a barbarian to a single weapon giving it personal stat boost.
Meditate horde: Gives a combat bonus to all barbarians joined into the meditators group.
Meditate presence: Allows a barbarian to sence the presence, (not the name),of invisible and hidden persons.
Meditate guard: Allows a barbarian that is guarding someone to block ranged attacks and targeted spells.
Meditate deathgrip: Allows a barbarian to hold on to their weapon in the event of death.
Meditate barbarian: What else? More BMR.
Meditate (person): Simply informs a barbarian in what direction the target lies, no matter if in hiding or invisible.
Meditations draw from ones inner fire but instead of a steady decline while under the effects, I'd rather see it as an initial payment of inner fire at the onset of the meditation. This would allow the barb to refil his fire before delving into battle to be used in other abilities.
I feel that meditations would bring barbarian culture to the forfront for all to witness and envy. After seeing the last work of our beloved GM's, I have great anticipations.
Thanx for your ear, Xixist

You forgot one:
Meditate surroundings: Gives the barbarian a greater awareness of his or her surroundings, increasing both passive and active perception.
Nice ideas overall, except for the whole using inner fire part. I'd rather they ran off of something else entirely like concentration, but that's just me.
Auroch clamps his fist around your forearm and hauls you over for a merciless Barbarian greeting. Stifling a grimace, you wonder if you'll ever wield a weapon again.

An easy way to 'balance' them would be to make them work like another guild's abilities. You use one, it lasts for a duration dependent on your concentration, and then there's a downtime. But yeah I agree. Making them stackable with dances and berserks seems almost MANDATORY to me. I don't care if they cost a small amount of IF, just make one meditation stackable with one berserk or one dance!

The funny thing is. These are mutually exclusive statments.

Yes, they are. One is me suggesting a system I think would be good. Another is me saying I wouldn't care if it fucntioned this other way instead. That is not me saying I want them to function in opposing ways at the same time.

I really like that. Especially how it takes things out of the do this and get such and such boost archetype.
Anyone else have thoughts on how a meditation(s) could be different from the do X get Y framework?

Meditate horde should give an MO boost, not affect a whole group, IMO. Very nice ideas though.

Only thing I don't like is the whole "bleeding" thing. Couldn't we just spray tomato juice out of our nose?
1) Get stunned, get a lil IF boost cause we're pissed?
2) Lose an arm, have the new verb, "Spray" which allows you to blind your opponent with blood?
3) Eat spinach and gain super strength.. although I may have heard that from somewhere.
4) Or maybe just hearty food that boosts something for a time, but the downside is you get severe stomach cramps that cause stunning or RT when it starts to wear off. Or explosive Flatulance.
You know they say that cat IJ is one bad mother- "Shut yo mouth!" - I'm just talking about Ironjonn! - "I can dig it-"

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, Iayn, but I've always liked the idea of a meditation that would work like the blood staunch spell in that we could slow bleeding to help survive situations where maybe we lost a limb or have a huge bleeder or a lot of little bleeders with low vit.

Have one that is the sort of the opposite, the more times you successfully defend, the stronger you get. Tied into the difficulty of the incoming attack versus FULL defenses most likely so people don't go dodge rats to at 0% in stances get the power up first or something.
A meditation that doesn't allow hiding, at least to me it doesn't make sense to have hiding in this, that when started doesn't allow you to retreat but the multi penalty stays at having two creatures on you even if there is only one but doesn't go above having two creatures on you even if you're engaged by more or if that is too much, then have it not go above three.
Sorta like in the movies when you see a circle of opponents around the one kick-ass person who is dodging/parrying etc...

This is a half formulated idea so bear with me on this but what if you spent time before combat doing something with one particular weapon out of your entire arsenal, and that focus gives you a slightly better [insert word for atunement or what have you] when you use that weapon. Now keep in mind that I know many barbs will switch up weapons while in combat. For example, you spend time cleaning the nicks from the claymore so while you're using the claymore it might be just a tad sharper than the other blades you have for a short period of time. Of you adjust the strings of your crossbow and oil it and it works just a little more efficiently than it would for a few rounds. Cleaning a weapon, working over it lovingly with a pumice stone, that kind of thing can draw a meditative state while also making that weapon just a little more efficient until the nicks and coating of gore undo your work.
This is what I get for trying to think outside the box, I get lost and end up here. ;)

Meditate steel - the more hindered you are, the greater your BMR becomes. Really adds a twist to things.
Meditate swift - a barbarian finds himself quickly able to advance and recover from stun, but slow to move from room to room.
(increases advance rate, adds variable RT to moving from room to room.
Meditate sky - the barbarian draws from the weather to power to sharpen his image in the minds of his foes. The stormier the weather, the more intimidating he becomes. In clear weather (or indoors) a barbarian sacrifices intimidation for increased IF.

I would just like a meditation that improves IF gain, and shrinks IF usage while berserking or dancing...that way with a meditation going and then using a dance or berserk you can actually do some of the higher abilities.
Like I would love to mediate a few before going into combat and berserk cyclone and not pass out at the end.
Or possibly a mediation that allows berserks to bypass the "out-of-combat" state that kills your berserk.
Codiax.
Why kill anything when you can kill mages

i can see the out of combat bypass one now
meditate pain you keep a small knife in your off hand and every pulse if you aren't in combat you stab yourself to keep you focused on your anger. (tiny vitality hits in exchange for ignoring out of combat)
Have you ever seen a bard dance...like this?!
