How many people would actually do this? It has very little value compared to a pet Trader, Empath, or Cleric.

I really think they should make BMR a choice in the future, perhaps sometime after enchanting is out.
Let a barbarian choose whether they want to be able to use magic or not. If they want to use magic that's fine they can have all those sparkly lights, bells, and whistles with no magic resistance. If they choose to use no magic....and I do mean absolutely no magic whatsoever...then they can simply laugh when its attempted to be used on them.
At least that way each player can choose which way they'd like to go with their barbarian. Personally roars, BMR, and Berserking aren't very thematic for my barbarian....so I pretty much only use dances. Of course this is in Plat.
I think having more choices and options is a good thing.

I really dislike the idea of being able to choose Magic or not. One of the basic tenets of Barbarianism is that we not only do not like magic, we abhor it. To give the choice would be to completely change what it means to be a Barbarian. Not that I think any of our current (or past for that matter) GMs would ever consider this, but I just want to say that I really do not like it.

That would be like giving Paladins the choice to steal and be just like a Thief.
Or giving Moon Mages the option to use elemental magic instead of lunar.
Or giving Empaths the choice of a life of healing or allow them to kill instead.
That is something I'd hate to see for Barbarians. Not all change is for the best.

warning this is just an opinion.
I think the problem comes from the differen types of roles i see barbarians played as. One is your anti magic stinky smelly eats goblin tongue for breakfeast and likes it madman. The other is a much more refined weaponmaster style character.
How to solve that problem well personaly i say we eat all the pansy waisted lilly lovers that want to use magic and finesse. But OOC its a vaild RP perspective, and I think a branch system would be amazing for this and all other guilds. I think giving people the options to make choices in there career path is a wonderful idea, even if it means some barbs would use magic as long as there are consequnces. IE guild leaders that wont speak to them, abilies lost, etc. as long as those things that are lost are replaced via something else.

I can see Barbarians deciding to forfeit control of IF in order to make or use magical enchantments or be some sort of magical smith.
However, there is a point where your character simply fails to be a Barbarian - as defined by a guild - in any sense of the word, which sort of begs the question: why didn't you choose a guild more appropriate for your character's personality?
Tactical weapon master is certainly a valid choice and is reflected in dances and battle cries. Magic-using Barbarian? "Magic is bad" is the first thing Agonar tells you when you join. You can be a tactical weapon master in the Warrior Mage guild if you really think you should be able to use magic well.

Re: **READ THIS FIRST** Barbarians and MR on 01/31/2008 01:06 PM CST
There are absolutely different kinds of Barbarians running around. Some are your animal skin wearing wildmen and some are plate wearing, silver-tongued finesse fighters. Is one or the other more correct? Not really, they're just different. While a 'barbarian' may be closer to the wild extreme, who is to say that the guy in plate can't break into a berserker rage?
That said, I think you can go too far with it and fall in a spot where you aren't really a barbarian anymore. Inner Fire is at the core of what the guild is, much like our berserks and dances.
If you want to be okay with a weapon and use a bunch of magic too, be a Warrior Mage. If you want to be great at defense, good on offense and use a little bit of magic, be a Paladin. If you want to own the world with your you weapon and take a good deal of what the world throws at you while laughing in the face of magic, be a Barbarian.

I just wanted to day...
I am a civilized, sophisticated, highly educated Elothean barbarian. Thus I don't fear or despise magic. However I have taken a different path.
The original use of the term "barbarian" originated to reference anyone not from Roman or Greek civilization during that era of time. In fantasy it's taken on the more bloodthirsty stereotypes, but I personally don't see those stereotypes as mandatory.
I've chosen to take the path of one who uses his inner fire for his strength, but maintains focus as a disciplined warrior. I am hoping that meditations give him more opportunity to portray that image. Only under dire circumstances does he allow his rage to unleash outwardly in combat.
That being said... I think by default barbarians and use of magic should not mix, period. I say this not so much because of historical definitions, but it IS a defining characteristic of a guild in Dragonrealms. It's the most defining characteristic and cannot be removed from those who choose the guild.
I'm not sure I like the group inner fire thing either. That is just a personal opinion. I don't see how it really fits into any conception.
My fear with BMR tweaks is that magic at high ends is exceptionally powerful. It's more easily trained than any actual combat and for reasons I won't repeat, there is already a distinct advantage for being a mage. If I can get hit by several mages in prime with a number of spells, and there's an uproar about "invincibility" then I seriously see problems arising if it's scaled down. Seems the barbs in TF find it the same way.
There's a LOT of things to consider here and as I promised, I will bring attention to that fact over and over.

You know in all respects I can agree with that but you know what I would like to see. More than 2 roads for a barbarian to go down you either berserk or you dance. Can we expand that to give barbarians more choices, meditations would be a good start. I just believe there are more than 2 types of warriors. I know Ssra is still working on dances so I won't complain about them til he's finished.

I thought several GMs already said that BMR was broken and that the calcs break down? Did I miss something or did someone else? What exactly is being argued here?

I love that.
You know, I've played Drex as my main for at least 7 years and I'm just now starting to actually get a feel for her as a barbarian. She's been everything but in her RP and that conflicted to being a barbarian. However, magic never entered my mind and it still doesn't. I LIKE not having magic as a part of her.
What I DO like is having her out in the field in a skirt and heels kicking the crap out of things with her hands and feet. I can be different and unique as a barb and still not use magic. To me, introducing magic into the guild is diluting it and watering it down to become a cookie cutter guild and it'll be followed up with complaints about rooms without mana. Blah, I say.

To me it seems that a barbarian using magic would be like an empath deciding to hunt. Empaths would lose the ability to heal and advance in the guild. Barbarians would lose ability to advance in guild. You could still use all that the guild has taught you so far. Though, to the guild leaders, you would have turned your back on their core beliefs. They would refuse to futher advance and train you.
