I am in full agreement that BoTF is better at regaining mana. It's also cyclic, so it bars you from doing other things that could help you, your party, or your room. Nexus is an area cast and I can get it to nock the room up two bars. That's not bad for a fire and forget it spell that hinders me in no way. If you have to make a hard choice, you have to make a choice. And to be honest, I like that we can both be bards, probably around the same level, without being carbon copies of each other.

I think that's completely possible that BoTF is returning more attunement than nexus (if it returns any more).
You do bring up a good point about returns though. Maintaining BoTF is much easier in a room with a strong nexus, and you're taking less of a hit for all of the things you're spending the mana on.

I can if I value things like Harmony, Tears, and several other of our enchantes over Nexus.
Backfire rate was only mentioned as a way to explain why they're cast at full prep. Backfire can and will happen any time you wish to snapcast at more than minimum.
That said my augmentation, primary, and attunement are all over 300 while my weapons are still at or around 150. A throwback to how the old systems worked as I was not a circle chaser.

at ~14 mana ( maximum I can cast without backfiring ), I can cast in a mana weak room and be at 100% attune with barely any negative to my attunement per pulse.

Alright, test time!
Magic skills -
Elemental Magic: 335 34% concentrating (9/34) Attunement: 223 50% perusing (2/34)
Arcana: 220 66% learning (3/34) Targeted Magic: 234 89% clear (0/34)
Augmentation: 292 79% considering (6/34) Debilitation: 277 31% clear (0/34)
Utility: 261 40% clear (0/34) Warding: 277 38% learning (3/34)
Sorcery: 26 53% clear (0/34)
Routine is - From full attunement, prep harm 30, charge 5, prep rage 20, charge 15, prep name 30, charge 5, prep drum 20 charge 15, all full preps, invoking the cambrinth right before casting the spell. Shimmering room (lang bin)
With neither Nexus nor BotF, routine ends me at 13% attunement.
With a 10 mana BotF (I can do up to 14, but figured that would be a good place to start) - routine ends me at 28%
With a 17 mana Nexus (best I can do) - Room mana upped to Pulsating, routine ends me at (weirdly?) 12% attunement. I'd say that indicates the benefit to me is insignificant and/or I got hit with weird pulse timing.
With 10 mana BotF and the 17 mana Nexus still up - routine ends me at 24%. Again, I'd say that indicates Nexus isn't doing much, and the variation here is due to pulse timing.
So, quick thoughts - Nexus is obviously non cyclic, and both Nexus and BotF help everyone in the room. I also notice the room effect of BotF is pretty shortlived - I presume it's length is longer than the pulse time of BotF? If it's dropping between refreshes, and attunement pulses are happening then, that might be problematic.
With 14 mana BotF and the 17 mana Nexus still up - routine ends me at 36%, so, I give up.
