8 (angle), 12 (lap), and 24 (large), if I recall correctly.

a large silverwood harp
The silverwood harp appears to be a stringed instrument.
You are certain that the silverwood harp is crafted from wood.
You are confident that the silverwood harp is finely made.
You are certain that the silverwood harp is slightly dusty.
You are certain that the silverwood harp is strung with a set of eight gut strings.
You are certain that the silverwood harp is in perfect tune.
The silverwood harp has a bit of weight to it.
You are certain that the silverwood harp is worth exactly 6000 kronars.
The harp, designed to be portable, features a long, slender hollow base that rests against the chest when played. A riser extends from the bottom of the base to support a gracefully curved upper arm that completes the triangular shape of the instrument. The twenty-four strings of differing lengths are anchored along the center of the base and stretch upward to connect to the upper arm with small pins that allow the musician to keep the delicate instrument in tune.
Also, it is good that a lap harp no longer recalls as a bow harp, but the recall for lap harps does not say how many strings it has and the appraise still says that it has eight:

The lap harp feels light.

The harp has an elegant, triangular shape across which run its many strings. The long slender body has inconspicuous sound holes on either side of its many strings that run from the base to the gracefully curved upper arm that holds the tuning pins. It is just small enough to be played from the lap or against the chest.
Could the reason why a harp's appraisal and its recall disagree as to the number of strings it has please be explained? It makes no sense at all that when I appraise a large harp there are eight strings but when I recall it there are twenty-four strings. I have not yet broken the strings on my harp and hopefully will not ever do so, but if it happens, am I stringing it with a set of 8? I don't even know where to buy a set of eight gut strings. I have sets of twelve and sets of twenty-four, but not eight.

Re: Harp Strings on 06/27/2006 12:46 PM CDT
When the harps first came out, Vael and Dart explained the recall and the appraisal differences but for the life of me, now I can't remember what they said. It's been at least a year or more now since the write up on it. I want to say that the recall was the generic meaning while the appraisal gave the actual information, ie number of strings. Recalling is a way of getting a quick history/generic information on the instrument, not exactly what YOUR instrument has. Not sure if I'm making sense or not and I might have it wrong. That's what this poor, aging mind remembers, slightly. And no, I don't mean my character. haha

I think you're pretty much right, Eoworfinia. Recall gives you some information about the general class of instrument. Appraisal will give you information about your specific instrument.

Re: Harp Strings on 06/27/2006 01:14 PM CDT
Perhaps so, but it makes no sense whatsoever for a large harp to have only eight strings. The different sizes of harps should actually use different sets of strings. It is illogical and confusing that they do not. And I still do not know where to buy a set of eight strings.

Re: Harp Strings on 06/27/2006 01:31 PM CDT
I suspect they were made with 8 strings originally since the number of strings has a lot to do with the base difficulty of the instruments... for the most part, instruments with more strings are more difficult than those with fewer strings. I believe that psaltries and zithers, the hardest of the stringed instruments, have 24 - I'd have to check them after I get home to be sure, though.
As for buying a set of 8 strings, you might check the bard's shop in Haven - I seem to recall he carried just about everything you might need to fix any instrument.

Checking into the number of harp strings per type (because I could have SWORN that they didn't ALL take 8 strings - and yes, I just did check, and they all app as taking 8...bizarre...) as well as availability of strings (because again, I could have sworn before the release of the merchant that I checked to make sure there were strings available SOMEWHERE in a 24/7 type of shop for them...)
I'll do some digging and see what I can come up with. Or I'll go flail and whimper and stuff in Dart's general direction and see if he can give me any insight. Either way. ;)

Update on the harp string situation -
I've at least found out why I was seeing one thing for number of strings on at least some of these and y'all were seeing another (and it has nothing to do with any kind of "recall").
Will keep investigating.
BTW, for those with "child's" harps...they're 4 strings, and they seem to be fine; large angle harps are at 8 and also seem to be fine (though I know that doesn't help you with the "Where do I get 8 strings?!?!?" thing. Will be looking into that as well).

Bagpipes (and chanters) are all very well for those who wish them. More power to you. But what I'd really like is for the harp string situation to be attended to. (I know, I know, it's being investigated and I do appreciate that.) If lap harps start appraising with 12 strings and large harps start appraising with 24 strings, that will be wonderful. Then all that will be left is to put sets of eight gut strings in a bard shop somewhere in the lands. How about in the Crossing bard shop in the back room with the other new stuff?

Because that is the way it was coded. Is that right in the Real World No. But to be honest I dont care there are plenty of other containers out there that are belt worn but can hold half an armory. I'm pretty sure the thing with these cases is they dont care about the length of the item just the overall weight in the case. My best guess on why it was done that way is so that there would be a case out there to hold harps, and I sure as hell am not going to get upset over the fact that it is belt worn instead of slung over my back.

Did you get that one off the bard barge in Shard during the Outcast festival? So I'll ask him where he got it... hmm, looking at it more I found something about I had not seen before, so no he did not get it from the bard barge but yes from the fest. Let me see if gain more of them and I'll let you know.

I can clarify this a little bit at least, since I was living in Shard at the time of the fest and paying close attention to the wares.
The instrument cases sold in the Shard boat during the fest originally held harps. I bought 4-5 of them. Then, about 3 days into the festival, the cases "changed," although they still looked the same. Meaning: the cases no longer held harps.
So it all depends on when you bought the case from the Shard fest.

And here is yet another plea for the harp strings to be corrected. Everything larger than a child's angle harp still appraises with eight strings. Also, no music shop in the game sells sets of eight strings, so the large angle harps that are supposed to have eight strings will still be out of luck if the lap harps and large harps are fixed. There should be a set available in Crossing, where the harps are sold, in the True Bard D'or's shop.
I love that Heavenly Harmonies appeared in the seacaves, I do. But I was really hoping that there would be shoulder worn harp cases in addition to the harps. Ah well, someday, perhaps, I will have a case for my harp instead of a haversack. A 'harpcase' would be great. Making it plain that it only holds harps.
Yes, I know some cases from the bard barge at the Shard festival last fall hold harps, but I didn't buy any of those. Besides, I want a black or silver or at least emerald green one that will match my outfit. Perhaps have the cases and make them able to be dyed? Hehehe...
