Ok, I've gotten many helpful tips in the past from you guys, and just took a 6 month break or so. While recently reading the boards (Lots of posts, took about 4-5 days), I've learned of the PLAY rewrite. I guess Im just looking for a way to continue my instrument learning with the new system, as it seems so huge Im afraid to jump in and spend 2-3 hours (which I rarely have) just to find out Im doing something too easy or too hard. If someone could give me some helpful tips on how/what to play, etc, I'd really appreciate it.
Skills are:
Percussion 126
Strings 123
Winds 125
Any help is greatly appreciate, and thank you in advance.

Pick an instrument you like. Type PLAY. The song types are listed from easiest to hardest. Go through the list until you get a messsage something like "You manage to play your song with slight difficulty". Play the hardest song that gives you that messaging. If you're fumbling or playing beautifully then you probably aren't learning as good as you could be.

On my website I have a script called Reckus NB that runs in StormFront. You edit the very beginning by putting in your instruments and tools... Then just run the script, and it automatically finds the proper style to play each of your instruments at. It will also adjust itself once it outgrows those. The only catch is that you need one of each type of instrument for it to work.
The simplest way to train instruments under Play 2.0!

I've nearly got a script for genie done. I don't know if anyone in Prime uses Genie, but if you do, it's about 2 days from being complete.
It works MD (with 2 armbands), all 3 instruments, and is nearly weather proof. All i need to do is incorporate reckus into it before i call it done.

Hey Aveda, I found a spot where it sticks up on me. Its near the end (I think), havent really checked it too hard to find it. Im still old school and dont use shift often, or many of the variable labels. Ill show you a log of how its happened to me twice. Happens after the wind instrument hits bewildered or above (where you have it set to shift to next instrument).

Re: Non-bard instrument playing on 11/27/2006 02:16 PM CST
Ok, after looking at it, I think the problem is that it tries to shift to a 4th instrument, instead of going to the end and showing exp lore like it should. While not a problem, the script is done either way, it has not technically finished itself. More a cosmetic problem I think then anything. Maybe I'm just silly, I should have looked deeper before my prior post to realize that it is indeed finished at that point. The only problem I see, is that I think even if I were to remove the two #'s to make it loop, it wouldn't hit that point. Dunno for sure.
(Edit) Eh, something I just noticed is that it is technically a problem. My hands are full so I cant make it loop even if I wanted to.

Ah, a fine catch. I guess that's the result of me trying to convert Reckus to Reckus NB. In Reckus, there were only ever 6 arguments, so once you did three instruments, there'd be nothing left after the final shift. But yeah, then you grab that pick.
So I took care of it! I guess you can say it was a bandaid fix until I can think of a more creative way to address the problem, but the script will now end properly when you're done locking your three instruments, and will now properly loop if you (choose to) enable the last line. Thanks a lot for the feedback! Heh, I wonder how many other poor folks are out there trying to clean their bows and picks...

Ok, this Im not quite sure on. I did it as a test, just to screw around with it a little. I had actually worn the pick, so it would always be on, and put a space in the stringtool section, just so it wouldnt cycle back and forth. This is the result I got. Maybe its cause I was wearing it still that screwed it up, or maybe its just my luck that all string instruments need a tool.

It still continued on to get the spoons, but because it had gotten the error, it ended the script. I promise, Ill use it how its supposed to be used now. Thinking its more an error with the change I made, than an error with your script. (just putting " " in the tool line, and wearing the pick.) I think I broke it.

Its official Aveda... the prior bug you squashed about it not finishing right... make it go insane. Now, if your instrument doesnt use a tool, your screwed. I set it back to normal and it finished strings (cause it had a tool to match with) and then it broke after percussion.

Im testing it now. I hope the one I saved (for the 93rd time today) is the official up-to-date one. Ill let you know if I happen to break it. If it works this run through, don't worry about updating the script ever again. If I can't break it, it probably won't break. The sad part is, I always break scripts without trying. Its a sad sad curse.
-Master Ndin, thrilled to have the script working properly now.
P.S. While typing this, it shifted to the 3rd instrument, so now your only worry is that it ends properly. Which Im confident you've fixed. Thanks again for the hard work, and all the updates today tweaked just for me. :P I feel special now.

Sort-of. Im a 24/7 stay-at-home father. Nobody judge me, there are reasons. Its not willing, and I will be returning to work at the beginning of the new year, if all goes well. But Aveda.. since your on... The last thing I posted last night about me breaking it, was that it still snags and pulls my pick out and tries to clean it. Like I had said before, it still works and locks all 3 scripts, just gotta put stuff away and re-loop it by restarting it myself.

It actually surprises me how taboo it seems to be, for the "father" to be the primary caregiver. You wouldnt believe how many odd looks, or "You must be a great father" comments I get from complete strangers when I run errands and such. I guess just the fact that Im holding my daughter outside of my home, or while my wife is not around, makes me the worlds greatest father. Don't get me wrong, I am a great father (not just my opinion, many family/friends agree) and my daughter is definately a daddy's girl. No doubt she'll have me wrapped around her finger when she's in her teens, but Im ok with that. As long as her daddy is god in her eyes.

I just returned from a DR vacation Aveeda and haven't been touching the new PLAY yet except for with my Bard. I just tried your scripts, though and wow-- they work fantastic. I do, however, have a quick question.
Common wisdom (it seems to me? So I have been told a couple times) seems to say that you should practice something that is just a little difficult for you. Your script seems to prefer something that is moderately easy to play. Is this always the case? I've tried it with a few instruments.

Well, when Play 2.0 came out, we of course all tested the bejeezus out of it, and the concensus seemed to be that "slight difficulty" taught better than fumbling. But hey, if you find out otherwise, give us a hollar!

I think the taboo is breaking down gradually. My husband is making the transition to stay-at-home dad in the next year, and he is wonderful at it. I love that it allows him to have a stronger bond with our son, and that he experiences a lot of things men traditionally don't as a father. There are actually a lot of dads in our area that work at home and choose this option, so it's not too hard on him.
I actually get a lot of flack for being the main breadwinner. I guess I'm supposed to feel guilty that I have a successful career? (Yeah, right.) I couldn't believe that my son's teachers stepped over the line the other day and made an inappropriate comment. You'd think it was still the 1950's or something!

Re: Non-bard instrument playing (long) on 11/28/2006 05:57 PM CST
Well, my wife has 2 physical therapies from car accident injuries in the past 2 years, and I have some legal problems that can be hindering sometimes. So for now, she is the main breadwinner, as I am the driver. She has seizures sometimes, so she's not allowed to drive. So, between the legal issues, doctor visits (baby daughter and wife) and being her driver, its hard to keep a steady job willing to fit to my schedule. I wish I could find something good to do at home, but oh well. She loves the fact that I get to bond with my daughter, and experience things that fathers dont normally get to do... like yell at the people at Medicaid. :P It was sad though.
Im on her medicaid account, its my daughter (Im on her birth certificate, which we had to provide to them) yet she has to talk to the person on the phone to authorize me to speak on her behalf. I understand people are finally starting to realize that men are (usually) capable caregivers, but this world still has a long way to go before us men are seen as equal in that regard. Until that day, Ill just smile at the people that give me the odd looks like they are retarded, and continue with my day.
I get to spend so much time with my daughter, that my wife can't comfort her near as well as I can. When she was first born, I was working and used to have to ask my wife what type of toys/techniques/etc my daughter liked most. Now, she has to come ask me those questions. Not that she's any less of a mother than most, just that I spend more time with her nowadays. Now she asks me which foods my daughter likes, toys, whether she's crawling or not, etc.
Anyhow, glad to hear your husband is good at what he does, and may you both have happiness and joy in your lives with your child. Sorry to hear about the teacher problem, its things like this that have me and my wife wanting to home-school our daughter, and we aren't using a daycare center until our daughter is old enough to at least let us know somehow that something bad happened while in someone elses care.
As this is off-topic, we'll probably get this thread shut down shortly, but its fine while it lasted.

Hooboy, that's the big one. Eventually, I'm going to have to delve into incorporating those more fully into Reckus and Reckus NB in order to make them more friendly to the really low instrument ranks, where back and forth looping has been a (rare) occurance. However, I'm not really sure what order all the songs go in if you add in all the difficulty modifiers.
However! In the meantime, Diminishedangel has helped me squish a bug that was caused by my bagpipe-friendly fixes I made a bit ago. Both Reckus and Reckus NB should now be bagpipe-friendly without the, well, baggage. Bug free! Get the latest and hottest! Woo!

Do you have the latest version of Reckus or Reckus NB?

In the last 8 years, Ive been laid off and jumping around jobs quite a bit. Those times I was at home with the kid were awesome. He has become my best friend, and now that Im working regularly, he wants me on day shift so i can be at home with him more.
