I know there have been a lot of posts on non-bards learning instruments but today, I was working with an empath who has lots of mentals and mech lore but very little instrument ranks. Percussions were not getting past pondering while playing in the sweet spot for over 15 minutes. The empath gained 2 ranks before we just gave up. She started out with 32 ranks. She was using a guiro. Would a harder instrument be better? The "sweet spot" was lullaby. Any suggestions? Oh, strings wouldn't move past perplexed before a pulse would hit as well. So, any help is appreciated!

Hmm. It's possible that that is normal, depending on how high the mentals are.
I'm finding that it is taking me much much longer to get higher mindstates after 600 ranks. I'm playing concertos on my gansa-gambang, didjeridu and zither. (Just as an aside, not sure how it relates to your empath friend).
I've always defined the 'sweet spot' as being the harded play style that you get 'slightly stumble' on. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
I would maybe suggest trying different instruments that still allow for sweet spot playing. I don't know if instrument difficulty plays a role with the new play styles, however.

I have a thief with 20something percussions. I've found the best way to learn with a non-bard is playing the hardest play "type", with the easiest "modifier". (aka off-key or halting.)
For gent:
With mibe, i usually play the easiest type, with the hardest modifier. This is with mid 500 thru 600 ranks.
INST.PERC: gansa-gambang
INST.STRING: zither
INST.WIND: bagpipe
STRING.STYLE: fantasia
WIND.STYLE: nocturne
PERC.STYLE: fantasia
MODIFIER: masterful

~ You know I could always put it back to the old roundtimes...
