Hoping this is an okay place to post, as I consider this related to combat...

Can anyone tell me if they have any tricks or anything to keep hiding moving effectively as you climb the critter ladder? My main is a Thief and I guess I'm so used to it outpacing my combats by so much that I didn't really develop effective training strategies...

At present, all I really need to circle for some time to come is Primary Weapon, and I just found out I can handle the beauty that is gryphons, but it seems like I'm not anywhere near being able to hide on them.

At present, hiding is 20 ranks behind my primary weapon, and a good 40-50 behind defenses... I use HC periphs and leather body armor.

Are there any communes, spells or tricks I don't know of that will help me train this other than underhunting or dropping hiding all together from my training? Even a little tip may help...

Thanks in advance.

Benediction will boost Agility which helps hiding.
Ease Burden will lower burden, might help.
Kertigen's Will will debuff the target's perception, but it's single target so a pain in high swarm areas.
If absolutely need to, you can stun critters with Phelim's, but it will severely drop the experience earned.

Could pick up a dark azurite runestone for Shadows. Lunar should have a low chance of sorcerous backfire.

Hiding at Ranged is easier than Pole. Pole is easier than Melee.
Take off a few pieces of your more hindering armor.

Or just train the heck out of Stalking with Hunt and wait for the skill combine ;)

What Kaskryn said.

Shadows is the key- pick the Azurite runes and use them. Don't harness more than 40 mana and wait until fully prepared to cast.
Get rid of the chain when you are training hiding if you are having any trouble. Great opportunity to train cloth or bone armor while training hiding.

You can also drop your shield and that will help- if you use SOL just drop it, if you don't put your shield away.

Kertigen's Will is very helpful- but train hiding hard now because the perception debuff is going away- you want to be able to hide with just shadows.

Oh and get healed up. Those wounds- especially bleeders just kill stealth training.

Thanks for the terrific advixe everyone - Shadows Rune is working like a charm at present, although if I might ask, why only harness 40 mana? Is there a risk of injury when you use a rune that isn't for your mana type?

Yes, it's called sorcerous backfire which is when your arms become damaged due to casting a spell of a mana type not of your own. The damage can range from light wounds to complete destruction of both arms from my experience.

The 40 mana is no guarantee, but I can't remember the last time I blew off Flavius's arms with using 40 mana

Ironically, the very next time I tried to cast shadows following this post completely incinerated my arms and hands. Its managable enough though, as I can usually track down an empath or autopath in time. Would scaling back to 35 harnessed prep theoretically help a lot? Or is rng going to get me regardless anyway?

There will always be a chance to hurt yourself. Lower mana will lower the chance but I haven't heard any estimates on how much.

Agility helps with Steal, but not Hide/Stalk.

If you ever backtrain, bring a ranged and using POACH is a good way to keep Hiding going even versus monsters well below your Hiding due to it ignoring caps.

Training Stealing also moves Hiding/Stalking along slightly. Not a lot, but it it gets you a few points depending on what you aim for.
