Is there any way to not have a new cleric join the Faenella cult?
I haven't spent a ton of time messing with it, but I know you can't align till you get devotion, but as soon as you interact with the devotion system it defaults you into Faenella?

You're right. I went back and read my logs and it was either the power command, or the 'ask about magic' interaction with a guild leader.

No, you misunderstand. To change alignment requires a base level of devotion.

Now, as far as I know, you could simply join the guild, then pray/etc. till you have some devotion, and align yourself to who you want, before interacting with magic and getting defaulted to Faenella.

Two reasons: Mechanically, to change the skills buffs/nerfed (since you get a hefty bonus to 2 skills and an equal penalty to 3), I personally prefer to set my align for something I find less easy to script to victory, like debilitation. Aug/uti/etc. can all be trained outside combat, so a 20% boost/penalty is meh. Or 15%, whatever it is.
And of course RP. It's hard to RP as 'cleric of X' when you've set your alignment to not-X.

oh, I know about the reasons to align to one particular god. It just seemed like you were trying to skip the part where you are aligned to Feanella first. Or, in other words, to change from:
Unaligned >>> Faenella >>> whatever god you want
to:
Unaligned >>> whatever god you want
If you are just trying to find the easiest way to align to the god of your choice, that makes sense.

one of the reasons they put Faenella as the default is because all the starting spells will be bonused by Faenella. Mechanical isn't a reason to change it before second circle.

I can't imagine what I said that would make you think that. I said there's not a mechanical reason for changing your alignment before circle 2 at the earliest. That wasn't an argument, that was simple fact. YOU argued with ME.
