Do the message cards sold at the shop have a practical use? I discovered that by turning them they display different messages.. how should they be used, if they can be used?

You just SHOW them the message card. In the line of text they see will be the message the card is currently turned to.

Edit: Never mind, found the cards :) I totally missed the second shelf.

New question, what are the journals used for? I assume since there are writing implements as well they can be written in? If so, how?

They don't record anything like the companion slates do, but you can WRITE in them for fluff messaging.
