I am not an Empath and I don't follow developments in the Guild closely, but I stumbled on something talking about there are plans to change how empathic shock works so that its impact can be minimized. Does anyone know more about this and can clarify the impact? Particularly, would this include Empaths being able to kill?

Well, they CAN kill now, they just receive a harsh penalty for it. The penalty will more or less remain, but there will be other ways of relieving that level of shock in the future that may make it less ridiculous to deal with. There has been talk of a quest and that sort of thing.

No matter where I go, you're always there to answer my obscure DR questions. Maybe one of the folders should just be "Questions answered by Reene."
I do not fully understand Empathic Shock as it currently stands, I thought the standard Empath would be stunned by aggressive actions long before they reach the point of killer someone/something.
But are you saying that with enough persistence, the Empath can kill, currently?
Is the current penalty for killing more severe than other causes of pain and suffering, or does it just last longer?

Currently, the shock stun kicks in when you take a swing (hit or miss) at something. That strike still counts. There's always potential for a skilled Empath to get a one-shot kill. If they don't die, you can wait out the (long!) stun then take another swipe. So, yes, it's possible now.
Shock lasts much longer if you kill something.

How do I slaughter thee? Let me count the ways...
I chop thee to the depth and breadth and height
My blade can reach, for even though I cannot fight
I can slice and dice with poise and grace.
I shall burn thee in a roaring flame
To a pile of cinders, with naphtha and scheelite
Though some would say this is not right,
I think it's fine and I feel no shame.
I shall put thee to sleep, it's child's play
Dismembering a body as immobile as lead
Nissa's Binding just isn't fair some say
It makes it so easy to cut off your head.
You can say it's not right, an Empath shouldn't flay,
But I'll like you so much better when you're dead.

Curious JMF but, from a post I can't remember where, it was mentioned a few TF Empaths had some rather high scores. Is TF different with regard to shock?
I do agree though that the AP spells would be the best chance at a one shot because that's what you would need. Just to see the effect I did a "back-to-back" low cast of EB followed by STRA which gave me stuns of 80 and 90 seconds. Not great shakes on the damage with because it was low cast trials but I've seen what higher casts can do. Of course those two casts put that character in active shock for about 10 hours IG time. At that time casting those worked with the brawl toggle both "on" and "off".

The shock in TF is the same they just took the penalty. The infamy scores aren't that high either if you look at it next to another guild. Thieves for example

I see someone was thinking the same thing I'm thinking. From a historical perspective, are there historical examples of "Empaths Gone Bad"?
With armor and weapons tertiary, a killer Empath would do better to take the magic route.
An Empath in shock could still cast spells, so even if they can't take wounds (and would a killer Empath care about taking wounds?), they could heal themselves. Nissa's Binding is out but other spells like Sphere of Protection and Guardian Spirit would be usable.
Puts a new spin on Battle Empath.

Kalamine is my character - and that took a long long time to kill "4" people. Two were mine - and a moonmage laid down so I could kill him with a wand two times.
I retired the character immediately after - I thought it would be amusing to have her on the INFAMY ALL list, which she was for a few months until a moonie newb knocked her out. :(
On the other hand, Chloey killed 1 person with an LB wand - and her shock time was approximately 3 months of time logged in nearly 24/7.
So yeah - the penalty is still alive and well in TF land.
Renegade Empath Raudhan just arrived.
A cutthroat gasps, "I can't get UP!"
A shadoweaver breathlessly whispers, "Raudhan, come dance with me!"

Wow, good to know. An evil Empath would kill the biggest way to learn empathy and move up in the Guild, and there's obvious RP possibilities where other Empaths might refuse to teach to them. I was toying with the idea of an evil Empath for RP fun, but I'm not sure why an Empath would go evil in the first place.

Wow... how is that not broken? I'm glad you said that, because I was considering trying to get my empath on the infamy boards for fun.
Also, you really should compare to the top of the infamy boards to see the difference:

Not necessarily. I mean, Jomay never actually lost her powers (or at least knows a way to get around that limitation) and practically everyone agrees that she's the most evil empath of the entire bunch.
J'Lo, I'm a ranger.. I'd believe anything.....

I believe Jomay managed to be incredibly evil without acquiring shock.
So the real question is... when do I get to create a massive army of diseased bugs to do my bidding?

Killing is not necessarily evil. My initial Plat Empath hunted actively. He has his reasons which is part of the whole RP. A number of people thought he was a Barbarian but I fostered that. What it took to get him to be able to heal was ungodly.
Consider this if you want to try it. No circling while actively shocked. Stuns immediately and every time you swing, fire, throw, brawl offensively or cast a harmful spell whether it hits or misses. And I don't mean just those little pesky 15 or 20 second stuns either. There are few benefits and many drawbacks if you really are intending on being an Empath for the most part.
After the re-write? We'll see.
