I am newly returned to the realms from a very long absence. I see that the Wizard is no longer a supported front end but I am still using it for now. In various topics I have read of people using a wide variety of front ends some of which require an additional payment.

Which front end(s) are preferred by empaths and why?

Thanks very much,

Dellica

I use genie because I can heal myself and others without doing anything

I use Stormfront and Geni, preferably Geni for the above said reason.

I use Stormfront, because I have an issue with paying money for Genie, no matter how nice it's supposed to be. In theory there are supposed to be mods out for SF (I miss my buttons!), but I've never been able to track them down.

Many people have an issue with paying for a text game in the first place.

And the game I have no issues paying for. Eh, to each their own.

Well, obviously. My point is that if you tried genie you might find that it was worth the money for you. Unfortunately, the trial version is severely restricted.

I used Stormfront. I'm too lazy to learn Genie is the main reason.

I'd definitely stop using Wizard. It's pretty archaic and clunky.

I use stormfront. It's nice to arrange the windows how I want them so I can see the game and wounds at the same time. It also has the same scripting and macro capabilities as wizard that enable me to cut down on the tediousness of healing.

I use ZMud/CMud. ZMud = hardcore playing, CMud = me fooling around learning new things.

I can build Crutch-like scripts that aren't limited to text-based interaction. Image maps, buttons, clickable menus like you see in Stormfront, etc. My last empath healing script had a screen footprint no bigger than the menubar in SF and that's pretty dang small.

I use Wizard.

Always have (unless I'm testing something), probably always will.

Thanks Ryeka :) It's nice to be back but quite disconcerting as I have none of my scripts or highlights. Just feeling my way around for the moment. I am using the wizard for now because I really like Crutch and I don't think any of the other FEs have a graphical wound reference.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I will be checking out the other alternatives as I get more comfortable.

ZMud/CMud does, but it's strictly DIY. Because of inherent limitations to DR mechanics themselves (ie, incomplete HEALTH display, stacking wound/scar messaging in HEALTH, no streamed health information like in GS), the only accurate wound-counting you can do is via the TOUCH command. That's not so much a problem if you make sure to start from a completely wound-/scar-free state and don't go running around/doing things like engage in combat, fail a glyph quest (ie, do random things to get wounded), fall off a rope bridge, train a stat, or do silly things like licking your blade.

I think Conny might be working on a plugin for Genie 3 that will have a graphical interface. If not you can write your own. Not sure if the crutch is compatible with G3

Welcome back, Dellica!

It's been referenced above but the Wizard is in fact still fully supported, it's just not being developed anymore, which is different.

I use Stormfront for the variables and regular expression scripting capabilities, which are a modest but important improvement over the Wizard. I've thought about Genie from time to time but I don't want to pay for a front end either.

There actually is a version of the Crutch that runs on Stormfront, but to use it you have to install a controversial third-party plugin manager called Strata that was abandoned in an early beta state several years ago.

I used Strata and the Crutch with SF up until about three months ago when I built my current computer. I don't really use the crutch much anymore since I don't do a lot of healing these days, so I haven't installed it on my new machine yet. It's high time someone made a new stand-alone crutch for SF though. Surely there's at least one Empath-Nerd out there up to it.

I really liked SF but that massive leakage of virtual memory was really not very friendly when playing TF and leaving it run for days on end.

Switched to Genie2 and was initially a little annoyed but now am liking it very much. Genie2 has the health bars and I can rearrange the windows, which are features I liked when playing at the keyboard (e.g. Prime).

When I returned to playing DR, I made the painful switch from the Wizard to Stormfront, but I'd never look back at this point. There is so much more flexibility with Stormfront, that I don't know why I was so resistant. One of the biggest advantages to Stormfront is I can play with my settings on any PC I sit down at. All my scripts, highlights and window configurations are exactly how I want them. This is nice for when I play on my PC or my laptop, or even from another person's house (or your place of business, if that's your kind of thing).

Thank-you Farman. It's interesting to know that if I decide to switch I can use Crutch with SF too. That is my major holdback. It's nice to see you still about too Shaunn. I think I will stick with Wizard at least for a bit as there is so much else for me to do. Although, I will use SF today because my darling daughter took off with my laptop.

GM Obseden, it's wonderful to hear you still use the Wizard. Makes me feel a little less archaic. :) In game I am 55!
