Having reached 10th circle, I got when talking to Annael:

Annael Ebeshalek tells you, "You have shown your devotion to the Guild, to those you aid, and to your studies. For this reason, you are ready to be entrusted with the ability to aid those of your brothers and sisters in the Guild who have failed in their commitment never to attempt to harm another living being."

Annael sighs deeply. "Even for those, there is help and healing possible. If you choose, you may aid them by sharing in their pain. But like any other wound, you may do so only by taking it upon yourself. And because the pain of the shattering of the balance of your empathic skills is so great, you may never cure, you may only share a portion of that pain."

She looks searchingly into your eyes. "Aiding another empath in this way is a gift, never an obligation, and one not to be undertaken lightly. Remember that always."

Is she talking about the permanent scars empaths take on when they attack something? If so, how does this work and if I opted to help another, what would that do to my empath? It sounds as if I'm harming my empath if I would help another, assuming this is what I think it is.

Yep, she's talking about shock transfer. You don't take their shock scar, you only take the empathic shock. When you take empathic shock, you yourself will be under the negative effects of empathic shock for a bit and won't be able to heal anyone. When it's over, you won't have a scar yourself.

Ok so barring the healing down-time, there's no permanent ill effects to helping one who is effected. That being said, the one helped is then relieved of the shock (transfered to me) and is left with the scar but because I helped can then begin to heal again immediately after? Is that was this is all about?

Sharing the shock is just that -- the original Empath keeps about half of it, and the sharing Empath gets about half.

The original Empath will still be shocked, just for approximately half as long.

Not quite, but it's workable for the lower (normaler) amounts of shock where I assume the sharing empath would be more likely to bump into a global cap of some sort. There's a skill-factor involved, or at least so I was led to believe when helping out poor Gromnir. An elder empath found out Gromnir was in the Zoluren area one night and rounded up a bunch of us from the crossing guild to pay him a visit, and he told us to take from him instead of Gromnir.

Of course, this 70-something empath could've been wrong but since we all ended up with short shock times he seemed like he knew what he was talking about.

This is one time when I will strongly suggest that you ignore what Lofton has just said. If you share another Empath's shock you will halve it. I'm fairly confident Lorz has more experience in this matter than Lofton does.

Read up on what is in Elanthipedia if you haven't already. While not a complete treatise it gives you enough background for the casual Shock issues.

The shock cap is currently 2 years of RL time in the game. You can reach that with a single kill. If you can stand the multi-minute stuns with each Shock action you can kill to your heart's content and still not exceed that cap. Obseden recently posted that the cap will be reduced when the Shock re-write is out.

What he was refering to is a "shock chain" for long shock, it's typical for one empath to take shock from the shocked thus halfing the shock. Other empaths then take from the one who helped, etc. So it goes down more quickly for all involved.

I was involved in taking shock from Gromnir and can definitely say he had some nasty, nasty shock. The shock chain seemed an effective way to quickly get rid of the shock and be able to get back to taking more from Gromnir. It seemed logical too, that while some people mightn't be willing to take 3 hours of shock, they might be willing to take 30 minutes. No matter how much we took from Gromnir, his shock didn't seem to reduce at all. I'm pretty sure he ended up leaving after resigning himself to the fact he'd never be shock free.

He was an amazing empath (Dwarf of course)and I miss the seriously disturbing interactions I had with him. He's one empath that belongs in the hall of fame (if we had one!)

It's not the shock chain anecdote I was referring to. That's real and I've been involved in several in Prime over the years. That's also how I was able to heal again in Plat by creating my own chain with multiple accounts. It took a lot of 10th circle creations and IG time to go from the 2 year cap of IG playing time to healing.

It was the digression into conjecturing about low level shock global caps. There is no low level cap, there is only one. The only way to hit the shock cap is to make shock inducing actions. Sharing by itself will never get you close under the current mechanics.

Blindly sharing shock can lead to very surprised and unhappy Empath players. It's definitely nothing to take lightly.

By the very way the shock mechanics work, you cannot get to the cap by taking shock since you don't take the scar and once you take one bit, you can't take another.

Of course, this will all be changing soon anyway.

Someone stole Shock from my Empath once, whilst he lay unconscious and Bleeding in the streets after a brief altercation with a short-tempered Moon Mage. This was a few months after he'd murdered someone.

Personally, I thought it was pretty funny as I'm not a big fan of Empaths who automatically Take things without asking.

Out of the absurd amount of the things I take without asking, wounds are pretty low on the list, shock is nowhere to be found.
