Yeah, his father is a lawyer, so for Christmas he got this really nice camera for his birthday. Was like a $1500 camera or something insane. Does really nice instant shots (no waiting to focus).

The camera I see most non-pros shooting with and getting good results is a Nikon D70. You can get one with a lense and a card for around a thousand dollars but it will be a million times better then any point and shoot camera.
SLRs are really the only way to go, especially since the modern ones can be made to go fully automatic until your comfortable with f-stops and focal lengths.

While the D70 costs less, which is a huge plus, I'm just not a fan. That and Canon came out with the Digital Rebel XT, better resolution, small and lightweight, and only around $900 so it costs less then the D70 and the 20D. Less cost means I'd be able to buy a real lens and not the crap one that comes in the kit and maybe even a small set of lighting equipment. It also comes in black, much better then the brushed silver look of the other Rebels.
Biggest downsides are how very lightweight it is, only 17oz. Put some nice glass on it and it's going to get balance problems. Before I bought it I'd need to set it up on a tripod and toss a heavy lens on it just to make sure the silly thing didn't go and tip over. It's a little more clunky to use since everything is kinda smushed together. That may not be a problem for me, I got tiny hands.
Even with the downsides I may pick it up just for the lower cost. Lower cost means I can buy it sooner and the sooner I start shooting the happier I'd be.

I almost exclusively shoot fashion and switch between a leica manual medium format and a d2x attached via firewire to a G5. The d70 I have is for shooting sports and surfing and I can say that the glass it comes with is fairly good considering the price. And in my experience the good Nikon lenses just crush anything canon makes.
If you go with the Canon I'd love to see some photos, I'm still going through my latest shots from going big wave surfing off California but when I get them back I'll post them somewhere. We had a day of just unbeatable 30-40 foot sets that broke BEATIFULLY.
But as I say when your shooting magazine spreads and model shots you can usually control things enough to get a nice shot, or atleast something you can retouch well.
Just make sure you invest in a good RAW converter and set up an efficient work flow or else you'll just get swamped in photos.
BTW Heather Marks is going to be the next massive thing in fashion, she photographs so well its almost scary.

Theme parks.... still looking for help on this one. You guys have any advice on good places to take my son for some fun this summer?
On other hand, using one internet source, it turns out that California has more theme parks than anywhere else in the world. Pretty cool, huh? Another reason it's good to be here (although I'd rather be in Hawaii, but that's beside the point).

My son is ten. He's been to Disneyland 7 or 8 times (seven according to my count, eight according to his...needless to say, enough. Hehe).
He's a great kid and we do a fun vacation every year as a mother-son get away. I think our vacations is part of the reason we have such an enviable parent-kid relationship that everyone is always complementing me on. Besides, my favorite childhood mems come from vacations.
We LOVE Disneyland, don't get me wrong, and there's going to be something wierd if we don't go before the end of the year, but I figure we can always go for a few days after Christmas this year.
I booked a cottage at Kansas City's Worlds of Fun/Oceans of Fun because it just seemed like the thing to do: get out of CA for once... but I want to do more, go to a couple other places, too... maybe Busch Gardens Virginia or Cedar Point Park....
Although the lure of all the Disney and US stuff in Orlando is just soooo soooo tempting.
Don't you think I should avoid the cliche vacations and try to see a bit of America?
Yet then I think, well, if we're spending our days at the theme parks, how much of America will we see, anyhow???
Hard to decide...so hard. But maybe you know of some other really cool places to go.... From what I read about Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, for example, it sounds really neat : ) Will I regret not going to Islands of Adventure,t hough, if I'm going to take the time and expense to go across country?
This is my never-resting mind. It's not that I can't think, it's just that I think too much. Sigh.

My best friend's parents were both travel agents (retired now) and she's traveled the US pretty extensively. San Antonio's combination of 6 Flags Fiesta Texas (roller coasters AND water park), and their RiverWalk has probably gotten the biggest thumbs up from her.
And because I'm cool like dat, here're the Web links:
http://www.sixflags.com/parks/fiestatexas/ParkInfo/index.asp
http://hotx.com/rb/
And since you'd be in the area anyway, you could do something educational and go see that...whatsit...fort-thinger. I've heard rumors that it was kinda important to American History somehow.

Well being a CA boy myself, I was impressed with Epcot and MGM... however World was waaaaay to big for me. It just didn't have that nice feeling I get at Land... of course I could just be a bit on the strange side.
As for other trips... I see the biggest cross section of America at the parks, not the land but for sure the people (and of course all the world really). Also speaking as a very big boy, it all depends on his interests, I loved horses and so any place I could ride was ok by me. So maybe you could combine a trip to some interest area and a park too ;-)

If you on a driving trip to KC.. you might want to swing down to Silver Dollar City in Branson Mo. (about 3 hours driving time from KC) There is a white water park in branson, and tons of touristy things to do there (go-karts, waterslides, dinner shows, mini-golf) just be prepared for traffic... oh wait if your from CA your probably used to that crud. Having grown up in the KC area, WOF (Worlds Of Fun) was a favorite place to go and SDC (silver Dollar City) was a fun change for 'vacation'.

I like most of those cameras...but I just got an ELF for Christmas and I love it for taking some amusing shots when I did some photography over the winter semester...(yes..I was in school..partly why I wasn't here). Was fun, camera was easy, and I won first place for my "Rooftops Over PVD" photo at a competition.
Case in point..I love ma ELF.
Lis, really what I remember as a kid, is when our family did long road trips, and some amazing places I went were like Upper state NY, and Penn. NY was cool because I did some white water Rafting there. Now when I took my 5 year old niece to Boston for the Boston Childeren's Museum, I see that she kinda liked the ride more, and looking at the map, and when we got there, she was all proud like she found it on her own. Just a Thought.

Woot! Thank you, very good info here...
I have been leaning a bit toward TX... I liked it when I was there briefly one time... Yay, suppose I'll go to that fort thingy...wasn't their something I was forgetting???? Hmmmm.
Not going to drive from CA...would be far to excrutiating for me to be in a car that long, despite how cool it would be to see America that way, do route 66, etc. And so won't likely drive to Bronson. Glad to have an vote for WOF, though.... it sounds pretty neat on the website, especially with their Village place that's new this year : )
Thank you "Ree" and "Whispersoft"
Think I'll try both those places... maybe will try Busch Gardens Williamsburg if I can get some feedback on that first, just to make sure.

How've you been by the way? Drop me an IMer one of these days, eh, lady? Think you might be at the con again this year? I'm still trying to decide on that one, too.... if I go, I'd have my son with me....not sure how much he'd enjoy it...plus, I am not going to pay $243 for me and $243 for him when the two of us together won't do that much or eat that much.... so if Simu don't have a family deal, guess I'm not going.

Nah won't be going to SimuCon this year, I was going too, but then my moving schedual conflicted with it. Moving to Florida the week of SimuCon, so I plan on doing SimuCon and or VegasCon next year. Moving isn't easy, nevermind with the new boyfriend and all that.
Plus I still have yet to show him DragonRealms..or as he refers to it..the "Dark" side..
Kinda scared too...this game is addicting..but I know eventually he will..he's got his guild picked out and everything.

Alamo is great, so is worlds of fun/oceans of fun. I also recommend six flags over texas... and if you want to totally deviate from theme parks, try floating down the Illinois river in Tahlequah, Oklahoma... I enjoyed it when I was that age. It's better than a water theme park because you can do whatever you want whenever you want

Well, it's confirmed: I am registered for Simucon (geesh, I'm a nut...got DR in my veins I tell you! ::grumble::) which means I'm taking my son to St Louis.
Next is to find some kid activities in the St Louis area...
For example, will go to Six Flags, at least once, since I'll have my MarineWorld season tickets...
By the way, think I'll see who I can gather up for a group to Six Flags on Wednesday or Sunday.... anyone here interested in doing that?

Tom Sawyer style? 'Cause I bet my son would like that, too. Hehe. Now, mom might have her own objections to that, so are there companies that outfit you for such a trip with boat, canoe, whatnot?
Hmmm... dumb question. Afterall, if there isn't something like that, then a smart business person would get on it, eh?
So better question : ) Can you recommend a good canoe/boat/ raft rental outfit or tour company to go with?
Thank you for the advice

If you're planning on going to Six Flags Over St. Louis AND you're planning on visiting the water park there (Hurricane Harbor), I highly suggest you get there early and visit Hurricane Harbor first. It's a rather small place just inside the entrance to the main park, and being that you'll be there during a typically-sweltering time of year the water park's likely to be jam-packed all day long.
Park opens at 9am. If you're not doing the Harbor and still want to get guaranteed soaking wet, I suggest frequent rides on the Tidal Wave ride. If you stand on the bridge when a boat comes splashing down, you'll get 10 times wetter than if you dove into a lake.
J'Lo, no that other one

All of the rafting companies you go to for day passes rent out their own equipment if you don't have any. Basically, you park your car at their "spot" you go in, pay, get equipment, and they bus you to a point farther up the river, you go until you get back
