So with the advent of the Absolution spell, I'm really curious about the experiences established empaths are having now with combat progression. I'm starting to level an empath with the goal of training weapons, and I have a few questions about which direction I should take. I'm new to this so here are my possibly uninformed questions:
1. Do you find that with the inclusion of undead, there now exists a smooth progression of critters to train weapons on throughout your combat career?
2. Are you able to train skinning and boxes reliably? Glancing over some lists of constructs and undead, it seems a lot of them have boxes but aren't skinnable. Do you just train skinning by using a GS to kill living creatures on the side, or do you skip skinning altogether?
3. Is manipulating living creatures the most reliable way to gain empathy skill without having to find patients, or is it possible to skip the living creatures and train by other means such as health perceiving?

My Empath is halfheartedly backtraining weapons, only has about 40 ranks. He can mostly handle middle gryphons and has ~280 TM.
>1. Do you find that with the inclusion of undead, there now exists a smooth progression of critters to train weapons on throughout your combat career?
I think there's still a few rough patches in the 40-80 range. Tortured souls in Theren are good, but non-corporeal. I think boggles in Lang may train to 50 or so? It would be nice if there were some more corporeal undead in the sub 100 or so range. I guess Fenrae Reavers might be good, just have to ignore the wind hounds? I'm sure there are a handful that I'm missing, shrug. I would probably use it most for locking up Brawling, which lags way behind for my Empath and is only ~180.

Skinning is on par with my TM, and is entirely a product of using PARA+GS+Manipulate in combat against live critters. I don't train boxes, though it probably would have been worthwhile.

I find it more consistent than waiting for patients, and much faster than health walking. Healing patients of course is the fastest trainer, but you then rely on patients.

If you want to avoid shock, yes.

Yes. I dropped GS and only use TM, weapons and manipulate.
>3. Is manipulating living creatures the most reliable way to gain empathy skill without having to find patients, or is it possible to skip the living creatures and train by other means such as health perceiving?
Yes, if you are manipulating something at or above level to your Empathy. Just like weapons it has to be a challenge to get Empathy from manipulating and it needs to be maintained for a period of time. It is possible to PH and use anatomy charts/compendiums for Empathy, it's just not as efficient.
