I've always felt that a nice empath shop item would be a magic mirror...touch the mirror and see your wounds, not just internals, laid out for you in your familiar window ('cause there are times it would really help to not have to figure out your health as it scrolls past).
But, I also feel that a nice post 40th ability is the ability to diagnos patients and establish a link without directly touching.
Some people want to avoid healing and wouldn't be able to avoid a non-touch link? Bah! I want to avoid sniping, stealing, DFA, etc. I think it's enough that someone can, if they're so inclined to be such an donkey's butt, kill an empath who heals them when they've been warned not to.
I think there is too much hand-holding in game and in government, really. Sometimes people just need to stand on their own. Other times, though, it's silly how little assistance there is. What a silly world.

I really really like this idea! Someone posted a few weeks (or maybe longer) ago a very reasonable justification for why empaths cannot sense their own wounds, that being that if you assume empaths can attune the empathic senses towards our own bodies, then we would be in danger of getting shock from the very practice of healing a patient since it involves causing ourselves repeated injury. It makes sense that we have an empathic blind spot when it comes to our own bodies.
But the mirror is a really brilliant way around that. I have one revision to the idea though: Don't sell it in a shop, let us make them ourselves! The more I think about this the more I like it. To keep it consistent with the inability to sense our own internals, you'd have to use a mirror made by another empath, you couldn't use one you made yourself. So in that way enchanting a mirror would capture a spirit-echo (or whatever) of the empath who made it, which would also be a nice way of doing a makers mark. And enchanted mirrors would dovetail perfectly with an ability to hold a diagnostic link without touching or at a distance. We'd just make a remote link with a properly prepared mirror!

Thank you for the feedback, Threephi! It would be fun to make magic mirrors... but I'm going to sound like sour grapes... (sorry!) here goes:
As it would be a much larger system to make it player made rather than selling it in the shops, maybe we can hope to get the mirrors in the shops first and then, someday, if things of higher priority are not in the way, make it a player created thing.
Another way around that, though, perhaps, is buy it in the shop, but need another empath to "charge" it up. How about that for a compromise?

I know the mirror idea has been shot down forever. But, instead of mirrors I don't see why I couldn't touch amo and diagnois (or whatever name) and it would send the empath I touch a message as to where all your wounds are - much the same way it messages us where the herbs are working.
touch amo
diagnois amo int fresh
Amo would see/feel
You sense a tingling on your nerves, right hand, left arm, right eye
touch amo
diagnois amo int scar
Amo would see/feel
You sense a tingling in your head, abdomen and back.
etc etc. Sure I'm seeing the message too, I don't see any reason that I couldn't feed my feelings back to you. It eliminates the doomed mirror and works somewhat like the messaging we get from herbs.
Sure there is a great nifty program that sorts all that out and you can cut and paste it back in, but I'd much prefer things to work in the game instead of all these utility programs. This also keeps with the plan of folks working together, which I believe was a factor in not seeing your own internal wounds.

>I've always felt that a nice empath shop item would be a magic mirror...touch the mirror and see your wounds,
Actually, I'd love to see this expanded considerably. Basically you can buy a mirror and then split it. Through one half of the mirror you could touch the person holding the other half, even if it were yourself. In addition, with enough empathy or a close enough bond (such as with one's spouse) the empath could transfer wounds through the mirror.
Basically like the shells you could whisper to another person through.
