Why does the recovery timer seem so random?
Scholarship: 1251 53% dabbling
Mechanical Lore: 1100 41% very rapt
Empathy: 922 91% dabbling
Charisma : 82
Shifting age years I have seen recovery times from 3 hours to 20 hours on the same person.
That is a pretty big difference!

The next time Copernicus dies he will transcend such trivial things as ranked skills and become part of The Fallen Game Code. TF players will be able to INVOKE him to hear some vague, mystic-sounding predictions about their future.

Is this the actual time that it takes for the block to go away? The estimate for how much time is left is intentionally inaccurate if I remember correctly.

I think it's mostly the actual downtime that varies. An empath can get the estimate multiple times, and that does vary by 10-20% roughly. Meaning, if they check 20 times, the times will all be relatively close.
A pike staff is a quarter staff melee-ranged weapon.

I am still amazed at the randomness of the recovery timer for shifts. Shifting the same person age year shifts here are the last actual (RL) recovery time in minutes.
* Shift Recovery 664 *
* Shift Recovery 273 *
* Shift Recovery 672 *
* Shift Recovery 605 *
* Shift Recovery 732 *
* Shift Recovery 677 *
* Shift Recovery 695 *
* Shift Recovery 532 *
* Shift Recovery 529 *
* Shift Recovery 261 *
* Shift Recovery 676 *
261 minutes (4 hours) - 732 minutes (12 hours)
that is quite a bit of range.
Also considering the amount of skill needed and the long recovery timer shift teaches almost no empathy.
