I would like to dredge up the past a little.

A while back I disagreed with Armifer about not using a heavier armor than leather for MM's. I was of the opinion that LC was just fine.

I was wrong.

If you're just starting a moon mage, use leather. Train stealth.

That is all.

Agreed or go all the way and use heavy plate if you don't like stealth. I regret my chain armor training. :( Middle ground means you just suck at both stealth hindrance and protection.

Backtraining leather, but hate it. Don't like stealth combat, regret having hiding be a survival primary, even though it keeps me hunting. Would almost prefer having picking skills up there to keep me hunting critters that drop boxes, but thats a drag too.
LC lets me sit at melee with like level critters and hide against those that are weaker. I don't use stealth for overhunting, I use avoidance.

I guess my change of mind has been prompted by the increase of CvC conflicts I find myself in. Being able to at least go into RF with 50 held mana and not get found EVERYTIME would be freakin great.

Right now stealth owns. Abuse this status as long as you can. But be prepared for nerfings. I train way to many armors while hunting, but when it comes time to pvp, it's all leather because if you're not hiding, you're dead.

Quoting that first because DFA is the most overpowered, unbalancing ability in the game and should be eliminated. It boggles my mind how it was approved initially, and how it's been able to remain in the game for so long.

>when it comes time to pvp, it's all leather because if you're not hiding, you're dead

I generally go all leather for PvP as well, just so I have the added ability to use my stealth if need be. I train to be effective, or at least semi-effective, even if I can't use stealth; it's always nice having it as a fallback though. It's never good to be a one-trick pony.

Haha. Atleast with a bow you can aim at somone who's hidden. To target somone whos hidden you have to advance on them. We all know what a good idea THAT is as a moon mage.

Actually, it'd be worth testing this. I successfully targetted a lout yesterday while screwing around. I didn't get the cast off, but I figured he bolted. I'll test it later if I remember to.

You have to be facing them to target them while they're hidden.

DFA needs to be nerfed hard, but it will not be going away. The Shield Usage skill is not inviolate, and at this point I doubt you can bring an argument to the table otherwise which I have not already heard.

The problem with Burn and Lightning Bolt is not that they ignore shields -- a lot of attacks ignore shields, to less or no complaint -- but that the PCs with those spells can do so casually, with no additional effort and with only token restrictions for pulling it off. Both spells need to be weaker and cumbersome to cast, while still remaining in effect a can-opener for people who think a metal platter is going to save them from all damage.

Thanks for the response, A - do you have any ideas for how that can happen?

I'm optimistic I'll get to tackle them in '09, but with what this year gave me, it isn't wise to promise a date.

Those two spells are a source of intense annoyance for me, though they have slipped on the priority list lately since I know my solution (like most moderate solutions) is likely to make absolutely nobody happy.

"You have to be facing them to target them while they're hidden."

Yes. But "face person" dosn't work even with point effect on them. Target "person" dosn't work even with point effect.

This means the only way to face somone who is already in hiding to target them is to engage them, and even then it only works if you type "target" without their name.

FACE:

You search around for a moment.
Roundtime: 3 sec.
You notice Rivenmist, who is quite obviously attempting to remain hidden.
You find a hole in the ice at the edge of the riverbed.
>face Rivenmist
Face what?
FACE HELP for more information

TARGET:

>prep burn 15
That won't affect your current attunement very much.
Images of streaking stars falling from the heavens flash across your vision as you quickly form the patterns of the Burn spell.
>search
You search around for a moment.
Roundtime: 3 sec.

You find a hole in the ice at the edge of the riverbed.
>
You feel fully prepared to cast your spell.
>target rivenmist
I could not find what you were referring to.

ENGAGE:
>prep burn
Since you're not feeding enough power into the spell pattern to make it coherent, you quickly work your way to the minimum required.
That won't affect your current attunement very much.
Images of streaking stars falling from the heavens flash across your vision as you quickly form the patterns of the Burn spell.

>

>engage riven
You begin to advance on Rivenmist.
>target
You begin to weave mana lines into a target pattern around Rivenmist.
>target rivenmist
I could not find what you were referring to.

BOWS:
>load
Your crocodile-skin buckler makes the task more difficult.
You reach into your bag to load the ebony longbow with a razor-edged arrow.
Roundtime 9 sec.
>
Meragin tosses seven of his wooden lobsters into the air and starts to juggle them. He builds a smooth, high crossover pattern, and gets it going with a good rhythm, his hands flying with the effort of keeping seven lobsters going at once.
>search
You search around for a moment.
Roundtime: 3 sec.
You notice Rivenmist, who is quite obviously attempting to remain hidden.
You find some signs there may be a hole in the ice at the edge of the riverbed here.
>aim riven
You begin to target Rivenmist.

So yeah. That.

Yeah, I know. I'm just saying you can eng/ret, which effectively makes you face them, and then you can just use a general target.

I'm not arguing, I understand exactly what you're saying and I'm not disagreeing with you. Try facing someone and then having them hide. I'm not sure if it'll work or not.

Didn't mean to sound argumentative. Facing them before they hide works.

Eng/ret is the best work around if they're already hidden but it's a terrible work around all the same. If you're in hiding too it forces you into a stalking skill check which can alert/give spot effect.

Sorry for stirring up the hornet nest. I know that, when act on hidden was released, it was already stated that the TARGET verb wasn't working properly. I was just going off what I remembered. Here's the log:

Out of the corner of your eye, you notice a sleazy lout trying to sneak southwest.
You notice a sleazy lout trying to edge quietly past you.
>prep burn 15
That won't affect your current attunement very much.
You raise one hand before you and concentrate on forming the Burn spell pattern.
You feel fully attuned to the mana streams again.
>targ lout
You begin to weave mana lines into a target pattern around a sleazy lout.
>cast lout
You notice the sleazy lout attempting to steathily advance upon you!
The sleazy lout is still a distance away from you and is closing steadily.
(You don't have to specify your target twice.)
You gesture at a sleazy lout.
A brilliant beam descends from the sky and shrinks into a tiny point centered on a sleazy lout.

Honestly, I have no idea what was going on. Maybe adding the name when I typed CAST fixed it? I really don't know.

It may not be the most popular of opinions, but I think AIM from hiding should have a stalking check.

Sorry, quick delete due to typo.

It should be stalking.
Z (I think Z), has stated in the past re:hiding/stalking
Hiding: Finding and staying in hiding spots
Stalking: Moving while staying hidden.

Ergo, If AIM DOES have a check, it should be stalking, and I don't see what your problem with eng/retr to target (beyond needing to use a workaround) a spell is. Your complaint seemed to be that there was a skill check (stalking specifically). If I'm misunderstanding, please correct.
