Today I picked up a project again that I started planning for a few months ago so... of course I'm going to post a teaser.
Mortom adjusts his monocle and says, "The Sortena Rachlin pattern is a very specialized application of Perception magic that greatly amplifies and refines the subject's somatic senses. These enhanced senses are most commonly employed when working with delicate or complex mechanisms where eyesight alone may prove insufficient. Outside of those applications most magicians avoid use of the spell since it can be rather distracting. Before you can learn this spell, you must know one of Piercing Gaze or Tenebrous Sense. It will also cost two spell slots."
(Note: The name of the spell may change and none of that's been QC'ed. And, yes, this is rather redundant with how Piercing Gaze works right now... funny that.)

Of course all these spells start appearing when the wiki's image uploading isn't working...
Also, Gnome Wisdom! Yay! Sounds like an Engineering buff to me.

Re: I'm a tease on 12/22/2015 03:33 AM CST
It's actually an engineering and locksmithing buff and PG is dropping down to 1 slot (and will become castable on others).
There's some other minor improvements to the Perception spellbook (mostly surrounding prereqs) that'll be part of this release too.
There's another perception spell that was suppose to be part of the same project, but it's less trivial to write than a skill booster so I might not hold the rest of the release for the sake of that spell (whereas I wouldn't want to release the changes to PG without the replacement spell being finished).
I'll save you some headaches updating the Wiki with this link:
http://tinypic.com/r/281d3b/9
(Note that Mechanical Eye was the proposal name for Sortena Rachlin and Read the Ripples may well not be the final name of the other new spell and the slot cost isn't finalized there).

I'm always glad to see new spells and Moon Mage development of any kind. My favorite guild, for better or worse.
Have to ask- isn't there some redundancy in spells like Piercing Gaze, Tenebrous Sense, Artificer's Eye and now Mechanical Eye?
I imagine the Moon Mage prediction ability would be my go-to for buffing utility skills like lockpicking, enchanting, outdoorsmanship, etc. I can't ever see spending multiple spell slots to get these kind of buffs...
I know it's been said, but the current range of Moon Mage TM spells is so very deficient when compared to killers like Soul Attrition & Aesrela Everild. So I'm still holding out hope for a viable Shadow Web or Crystal Spike. Or that passive-spot Scry spell.

Piercing Gaze is a unique utility in the revised Perception book, so no. Tenebrous Sense is an edge case, but yes, the majority of its value is as a skill buff. The two Eye spells are pure buffs, however, and you can certainly compensate for their loss with Astrology.
They're there if you want them, and it doesn't hurt our feelings if you decide not to take them.

Yeah I have piercing gaze for astro training, as far as the others, no thanks. Just not my style, not to say somebody else wouldn't find them useful.
I've been pushing for CRS rewrite for a while now, to help as a TM filler to help out MM TM. Hell I liked the old CRS.

Just a few minor updates on Read the Ripples.
1) The spell is finished except some of the messaging. It's kind of cool if I do say so myself.
2) I liked it so much there are two companion spells approved and in the works (Also perception rituals based around prediction). One will be aimed at lower level users and the other aimed at higher levels. Tentatively I'm calling them Destiny Cipher and (censor)'s Conjecture.
3) Read the Ripples is about the most stellary spell possible and after some discussion with Armifer we decided it needs to move to the Stellar spellbook. Due to the unique nature of that book all this really means is that it will require a different focus, a different color code on Elanthipedia and a quest. I'm really excited about the quest.
/aside Do people realize that Stellar spells don't use an abstract "Stellar" mana anymore but actually use the mana of the most appropriate spellbook? This is kind of a subtle thing that I don't think is ever explicitly explained.

So this means there will be two Perception spellbook based stellar spells then? Any word on a Psychic Projection one?
<</aside
Fwiw, it's been included on the spells' wiki pages for around a year at least. I thought the lunar mana section of the mana page did as well, but I guess I forgot to include that tidbit. Fixing that now. I'm fairly sure its been explained by GMs during stellar magic discussions before.

Starlight Sphere = Moonlight Manipulation
Invocation of the Spheres = Enlightened Geometry
Shadewatch Mirror = Perception
Crystal Spike/Sorrow will be Moonlight Manipulation
Read the Ripples will be Perception
Mirror Wraith is currently coded as Psychic Project but for reasons we've discussed in the past it's unlikely that spell will ever be finished and released.

Well that certainly qualifies as a tease lol. :p
Was it still mechanically the same as before? I.e. a crystal entity that had a delayed attack after an initial damage or debuff attack? Or was it similar only in concept of a crystalline based attack? Or something different entirely?
The spell name Sorrow and it belonging to the Psychic Projection spellbook makes me think its less crystalline in concept and more likely to be a mechancially similar dual strike slash debuff effect. But that's just a guess without having seen it in action.

<<Nice, good to see its pretty similar to the old spell.
That assumes it has remained the same as that log. The only thing that makes me question if that is still the messaging is the use of Sorrow (or is it Crystal Sorrow?) instead of Crystal Spike as a possible name for the spell, I don't see how that messaging fits with the former, while it clearly fits the latter. Clearly a stellar psychic projection effect fits the messaging as it is a cold-based solidified-light telekinetic effect. I just don't see where the word Sorrow fits in from that log, since it implies more of a psychic attack as opposed to a telekinetic attack.

Sorrow/Crystal Spike will remain Moonlight Manipulation, not Psychic Project.
And mechanically the main thing not finished with it (aside from the cough cough quest) is the fact that I haven't put new damage messaging into it yet. It's still using the old Crystal Spike damage tables which have problems (And also don't fit the reskin).
It's also the first spell to use the new pulse mechanics I wrote and those will likely need additional work since I basically did enough to get Sorrow working and haven't done extensive testing for all the scenarios they don't account for. (I know of at least one bug with them I need to fix that came up while testing a spell Grejuva wrote that uses the same mechanics.)

Right now it's this:
Requires level 40
Requires the following spell(s):
Telekinetic Throw
Requires one of the following spells:
Dazzle
Burn
That might change - the spell isn't finished and I haven't worked on it in almost a year, so I'll go through some additional review before finalizing and releasing it.

Not sure how well you can appreciate what it's doing here (And the messaging is likely to go through a few more revisions to tighten it up) but here's where we're at with Read the Ripples.
I expect some of you will really like it and many of you will find it a useless spell. I'm okay with that. It also doesn't play nice with Teleologic Sorcery. This is also lightly ended since I'm still in development mode.

Re: I'm a tease on 01/25/2016 04:24 PM CST
Essentially it does two things.
1) It selects random objects in the sky. If you observe what it's pointing to the timer isn't enforced (It is for any other objects). Soon after that observation is finished it will cycle to a new target and the process repeats.
2) It bypasses the telescope checks to observe.
It's an extremely restrictive ritual - It doesn't like teleologic sorcery, you have to remain under an open sky and kneeling/sitting and you can only repeat the ritual every hour or so. It also works somewhat better at night. But it also lets you fill your prediction pools much faster than normal.
