I've been very judicious with my use of Transcendental magics. However, having recently picked up PHP and Consume Flesh, I'm getting the itch to start going nuts. Can anyone chime in with what sort of Outrage I could expect to accrue using these abilities with any frequency, say, hunting with PHP and BUE up, and using CF a couple times an hour to heal bleeders? How much buffer is there towards becoming Perverse?

I'd love to hear the answer to that too.

I have an added question: Does Calcified Hide have diminishing returns when you cast it back to back? I've at various points tried to keep it up while hunting, my initial casts lasting around 6 minutes. Then I could swear the more I cast it the shorter it lasts. Is that right?

I've noticed the same issue. It's been brought to GMs attention, so hopefully that will change soon.

So far I've had no issues with Divine Outrage while casting my spells and performing rituals. I've even been using Arise for training purposes. I think, at least this early on (sub 50th circle), you'd have to try pretty hard to feel the Divine Lashback. And by try hard I mean raising one zombie after another just for giggles.

I hardly ever use consume or any transcendental magic. I use consume maybe once every 2 days. Additionally, I typically train by using preserve and cut.

As of right now, I'm considered perverse, but I've never been killed by the gods or have gotten any messages.

I'm not really sure why I'm considered perverse, I've been arrested thrice and have had large periods away from cities each time. Unless consume gives a huge hit to DO, or performing the cut ritual constantly accrues DO I have no reason to think that I ought to be perverse.

Perverse isn't related to Divine Outrage, that has to do with Social Outrage.

I stand corrected.

With that in mind, can social outrage be accrued by casting spells or doing abilities that accrue DO even when you are away from a Justice area?

I'm pretty sure you got that backwards, in fact when you get smacked down it tells you that you've joined the perverse.

No, Social Outrage can only be attained through the Justice system IIRC. The only thing that can give you Social Outrage without being accused or doing something in town is putting up a Necro title.

I think my DO is pretty low (~0 + circle 9 base ) as the only DO spell I even have is QE. I've also been using preserve to train Thanatology. I'm going to cast QE until I get swatted here, and going to post the required number of times to get killed, provided that isn't against policy. Would appreciate a GM post on it if doing so IS against policy.

I randomly got swatted by Faenella because I forgot about Divine Outrage when I turned myself into a level 150 Necromancer for testing purposes and started killing other GMs with necromancy spells. I'm not entirely sure that counts, but it was pretty funny.

Everyone uses different forum sorts so that is decidedly unhelpful as the post will be in different places depending on how you sort the forums. If you can clink the little 'arrows in a circle' link next to the post number of that post, it will give you a link to the post itself.

My mistake. The messaging when you get smacked down is strange then. I haven't experienced it myself but I got the messaging from someone in TF who's never been accused or seen doing necro stuff in town (I think) but when he raised a zombie and got smacked down it said he was perverse.

Did somebody say, "steak?!"

Yeah, I haven't seen that messaging, but it doesn't surprise me that the word perverse would be used in a swat. That could definitely muddy some waters though.

I'm fairly sure there are two different causes of Perverse people are misunderstanding here.

To be one of The Perverse involves really high DO.

This brings with it fun penalties (like smackdown).

On the flipside you can be CONSIDERED Perverse by society (Which has downsides like 6 hours open instead of 2 for an accuse) which just means your SO has passed 50%. You aren't Perverse, but everything thinks you are (Outside of the Gods) so they smack you down for it.

GM correction if I'm wrong please?

Perversity has nothing to do with Divine Outrage. Only Social Outrage.

As far as the Necromancer NPCs are concerned, lore-wonkery perspective, a Perverse is somebody who sees Necromancy as the pursuit of power, which is typically displayed by their brazen displays of it when there was no need for them. A Philosopher is somebody who sees Necromancy as the pursuit of the Great Work and the associated transcendence of their human (or S'Kra or whatever) potential.

Zamidren Book and Xerasyth, both aligned to varying degrees with the Philosophers of the Knife, would have immensely high Divine Outrage as Necrolords who threaten the Temple's way of life.

QE is one of those spells that always produces DO right? Even if repeatedly snapcast? I'm up to about 100 consecutive casts now.

Is the decay timer for Social and Divine Outrage the same? Are the caps?

Presumably you can accrue them at very separate rates; Animation, Transcendental Magics and Rituals cause Divine Outrage, but if done outside a city, accrue no Social Outrage. If you cast ANY Necromantic spell in town, do you accrue the same amount of Outrage?

Perhaps you could clarify then what the comments like this mean, because clearly I'm confused:

>>Auto-success if the target is recognized as a Perverse Necromancer (justly or not).

If Perverse is simply a social status how can you be "wrongly considered Perverse"?

I think the only two necro spells you can cast in town without SO smack down are EotB and Obfuscation.

It's theoretically possible to temporarily get treated as a Perverse w/o the requisite Social Outrage (or even being a Necromancer), though not particularly easy. Currently only Thieves and maybe a very, very oddly handled Necromancer can manage this.
