There appears to be a problem using "Footman's Strike" against Cougars. Each time I've tried this spell against this particular beast, when I get to targeting it, I get the message "you are already preparing a spell". Anything other than letting the spell decay naturally after this results in the spell backfiring and subsequent nerve damage.
I've attempted on a several occasions to use this spell in two of the cougar areas (east of Crossing near "clans" and west of Crossing where they are mixed with Wood Trolls, Boars and Hogs) and have met with the same problem. I've tried varying the target command and the Prep levels without success. I should note that A)the spell will work against the other beasts in the room when cougars are present and B) the cougars are not impervious as "Stun Foe" works on them.

If I had to guess, it might think you're trying to prep Courage.

I believe it's less a targeting bonus with full target as it is a targeting penalty with anything less.
But either way, it is as others have said. You should always use TARGET with TM spells instead of PREP. There is no reason to use PREP for TM spells since the TARGET verb incorporates the preparation step into it and starts the aim process to boot. The only exception is TM spells that have special mechanics and don't use the TARGET verb at all like SLS, BG, etc.

Now I'm confused, I'd assumed that by prepping a targetted spell you could increase the mana used and thus the potential damage whereas by targeting and not prepping you were just using the minimum mana and so the least damage.
My reasoning behind this being that when you increase the mana on spells like "Divine Guidance" you increase the length of time they stay active and apparantly, from other stuff I've read, the effectiveness.

TARGET works exactly the same way PREPARE does including being able to indicate how much mana you want to use, but also starts to aim. You can target after you PREPARE but it is always more efficient to use TARGET instead of PREPARE.

Thanks for the info Absolon. I'd looked at the in-game instructions under "magic Help/targeting help" which gives you:

CAST [(target)]
Given that this is quite specific about what to do I didn't think to go looking for any other instructions.

The help for specific verbs tends to be correct more often than not, and elanthipedia verb pages are almost always just cut and paste from the in-game help with some clarification or explanation tossed in. <Verb> HELP and STUDY <item> are usually enough to get most of the answers you would need for any task, with elanthipedia being a good place to go when you want more details.
