It hasn't been said that it actually boosts shield ranks. The message would suggest such, but...
For that matter it hasn't been made clear that it allows medium arm-worns. Wythor did not show he was actually using the medium shield on his arm.
I'd hold off on complaints till players actually have access to the spell.

Snide version:
Etherial Shield gives a bonus to shield skill (according to Wythor -- and I assume he'd know). Should that be a Paladin spell, too?
Civil version:
I would certainly be happy for Paladins to get a spell to boost shield ranks or increase the effectiveness of their shields the way DA does for their armor. Aegis of Granite, however, shoult not be a spell for Paladins.

I would not be 100% sure but that spell was put on the back-burner because of the possible results of boosting/increasint shield size of a warmie shield not making it through QC or some such. MM have already been there with it I beleave that is where the GM post stating that was made. If not feel free to read a excerse my signiture

I don't really have a problem with it. I followed all of their threads when arm-worn first came out and like clerics (SOL) they came up with a spell that allows them to wear medium shields. As long as they can't go from wearing just small to large ones I don't have a problem.
What I see of it though that I'd like to steal for the paladin guild is the ability to add spikes.... Divine armor would be pretty nice if that was possible to do.
