Really, does anyone see a big difference in just using the default protect and protect cover? Maybe I am hunting too low to see it, but I really don't see any difference.

As Praxis said, hunt something that CAN hit you normally, then protect someone in there. You'll see the difference.
If you don't have time to do the testing, the basic difference is.. protect cover reduces the attack against the target, then any remainder hits YOU. Protect deflect also reduces the attack against the target, but any left over hits the target, not you.
Bottom line: If I'm protecting someone who's defenses are WAY outclassed I use cover. If I'm protecting someone anywhere in the neighborhood of being able to stand up to the critter, I use deflect, since the attack is reduced enough to allow their own skills to keep them alive when the remainder gets through.

Dig. Thanks Red. Right now, I'm nowhere near a critter that fits what I would need to do the testing. Adanf are a bit much for my pallie and everything else here is too easy.

My paladins were able to ask about Protect at- I think about the 5th circle. It might have been earlier. But it is something you need to ask the guard about.

Must have a blade or a shield at the ready
Must be standing
Cannot be stunned/unconscious
Must be in the same room as your charge
The block has to be within your skill range, as well, or else it won't give you any soul boost.

It's 3rd circle, and like with all protects you need to speak with the female sentry in the Crossing guildhall to learn the ability.
