I worked about a year ago with a couple of the Paladin mentors to put together a list of proposed changes to the Paladin guild. I wanted to take the opportunity to open up the document, put it online, and allow others interested in our fine guild to weigh in with their feedback as well. Below you'll find the link to the google document containing the issues I think we face, and a couple of means by which to solve them.

I'm very interested in your feedback.

That's a great way to share your ideas, and I can appreciate the time that went into it. Thanks for this.

To touch on the Paladin identity crisis problem, I think it makes most sense to make paladins more grounded than clerics. I mean, let the Clerics figure out what the gods want and work to further that perceived want. Paladins primary focus should be forging the ideal Elanthia. Let clerics focus on conjuring light shields and favor orbs. I prefer that paladins focus on making their earthly armor and weapons better (e.g. holy weapons/shield, bond armaments, RUE, DA, smite, etc.) after the more traditional buffs are covered (shield, defending, weapons, etc.).

Let paladins focus on the living (and cursed like Isharon suggested elsewhere). Sure, both guilds wield holy magic so we aren't defenseless against the undead. Similarly, both bards and warmages are both affected by the weather when casting. I see that as a story about the magic, not the caster. There is some spillover related to the mana theme, like I think CoZ makes sense as a paladin spell and MPP and AA are a thing, but I don't think sharing a couple (note: just a couple) of spells makes either guild any less unique.

I made some suggestions a while back going with the whole earthly holy warrior theme here: http://forums.play.net/forums/DragonRealms/The%20Paladins/Paladin%20Suggestions/thread/1689166?get_newest=true

I kind of like that distinction. Shield of light is +shield skill and +shield if you don't have one. Sword of light (pretend world) could be +weapon skill and a spirit weapon if you didn't have one. That could be the cleric domain. It's more self-focused rather than physically focused.

Paladins wouldn't be so much "armor of light", but "strengthen my armor through my light", such as Divine Armor.
- Even if it was without charges, the weapon itself could be given +1 to each stat (all 6) over time. Maybe one at a time as you progress in circles or skill. It would recalculate when you renew it, or maybe based on the number of renews. It's charge total and strength could grow. That would give you a reason to use the holy sword even without charges, and it would give you a bond of sorts with your armaments that makes the guild mechanically and thematically unique from clerics.
- Holy shield could be added in this way. Same charging mechanism. Make it grow stronger (better bashes) and feel lighter (reduced weight/better defense) and be less hindering. This could solve the problem of large shields being less effective than small shields for paladins.
- Holy armor (one piece only - so it encourages full /half plate). Same concept. It increases the stat points as your bond grows. Maybe gain some effects. Rub, turn, invoke, etc.. for increased combat effectiveness or unique abilities or soul free glyphs periodically.

It could even grow with your guild only skill. You use and recharge your holy items as a means of training it + whatever else is planned.

I think there is a lot of uniqueness you can build from this distinction.

Thanks for the feedback so far, guys.

I'd like to expand the google doc to incorporate other suggestions, as alternatives to what I have in there so far. You'd be okay with that?
