One of my suggestions on this long ago was to allow us to slam it into the ground in essence saying "I/We shall not be moved!" Which has rather solid historical grounds. This tradition is probably most written about in the U.S. civil war where defending the flag and keeping it hoisted was a number one priotiry of a unit. It was a rally point not only for tactical purposes but emotional.
